North
Carolina Gov. Mike Easley has appointed UNC Pembroke Chancellor Allen
Meadors to the Board of Trustees of the Teachers' and State Employees'
Retirement System.
The North Carolina
Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System Board of Trustees administers
retirement system laws for teachers and state employees and local government
members of the retirement systems. The board has 14 members.
"I am deeply
grateful for people like Chancellor Meadors who are willing to give
their time and talent to move North Carolina forward," Gov. Easley
said. "I know that he will be effective and diligent in his service
to our state."
Chancellor Meadors
said he is honored by the appointment and welcomes the challenge of
public service to North Carolina.
"This board
serves an important role in the financial security of thousands of North
Carolinians," Chancellor Meadors said. "It is an honor to
be called upon to serve the state in this capacity."
The Governor appoints
10 members; the Speaker of the House and President Pro-Tem of the Senate
each appoint one member; the Superintendent of Public Instruction and
the State Treasurer serve in an ex-officio capacity. The N.C. Senate
must confirm all members. Each member serves a four-year term.
Dr. Meadors has
been the chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke
since July 1999.
