Glaxo, UNCP Hand
Out 21 Mini-grants To Region Teachers

Research-based pharmaceutical
company GlaxoSmithKline and UNC Pembroke's School of Education have
teamed up to award $20,000 in grants to 21 classroom teachers in the
region.
Bill Shore, GlaxoSmithKline's
director of community relations, announced that the company would renew
its commitment to the program for a second year. He made the announcement
this week at an awards dinner held at the university to honor the grant
recipients.
Winning research
projects came from elementary and middle schools from Acme-Delco to
Fort Bragg and had titles like:
- "What Color
am I: Using the Spectrum Temperament Development Model in the Middle
School,"
- 'Connecting Phonics
and Phonemic Awareness in Emerging Readers,"
- "Math Club:
Home-School Lending Library,"
- "Birds and
Butterflies: A Secret Garden for Readers,"
- "Water:
An Important Natural Resource" and
- "Science
Projects Integrated Through Children's Literature."
"It's a privilege
to be in a roomful of heroes," Mr. Shore said. "For us at
GlaxoSmithKline, this is a great opportunity to help teachers."
GlaxoSmithKline's
partnership with Pembroke originated when Mr. Shore met UNCP's Education
Dean Zoe Locklear at a meeting of Gov. Mike Easley's First in America
Task Force.
"Bill's company
is interested in supporting diversity, and I assured him that this is
the most diverse region in North Carolina," Dr. Locklear said.
"GlaxoSmithKline is a corporate leader in caring about the public
schools of North Carolina."
Chancellor Allen
C. Meadors said there is a crisis in moral support for U.S. public schools,
and private sector support like GlaxoSmithKline project is important.
"Grants like
this one help our teachers do more for their children," Chancellor
Meadors said. "These projects are critical."
