Braves' Big WeekendDaniel OwnbeyBasketball

By Jonathan Bym, Editor

Two big events happened for the first time in UNCP athletic history on the weekend of March 13-15 for the wrestling and men’s basketball programs on a national level.

Senior wrestler Daniel Ownbey captured his second straight 141-pound national championship and the third in the last four years for the program with Mike Williams bringing home the national title in 2012. Ownbey rolled through all four of his matches and won the national championship 13-5.

The UNCP men’s basketball team qualified for its third NCAA tournament trip in five years at Lincoln Memorial University on March 14. The Braves won 89-82 over Columbus State in the first round of the NCAA tournament to pick up the first win in the NCAA tournament in postseason history. The historic season for UNCP ended the next day to Montevallo in the regional semifinals as the Falcons prevailed 78-59.

Senior Griffin Pittman had a big weekend with 31 points against Columbus State and 10 against Montevallo, while junior Brandon Winford scored 16 and 14 in two games.
