Netters Lose In 5 Set Match to FMU

UNCP’s volleyball team traveled to Florence, S.C., for a match against Francis Marion that went five sets with the Lady Patriots defeating the Lady Braves 3-2.
The Black and Gold had their two-game winning streak snapped with the loss, and Francis Marion posted its second victory in their last three matches.
Both teams played pretty evenly for a good portion of the first set, but Francis Marion used a five-point run to take a commanding lead after the teams had been tied at 15.
Francis Marion had reached set point and had a seven point lead over UNCP.
The Lady Braves then fought for a four-point run to give themselves a chance to salvage the set.
Francis Marion called a timeout to regain their composure, and on the next point Meagan Fajman’s kill gave the Lady Patriots the set win, 25-21.
UNCP came out for the second set looking to even the score as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead.
The first two points were kills by Cecilia Brandon with an assist from Sabrina Gonzalez each time.
The Black and Gold continued their success through the set as they built up a 20-10 lead.
Nicole Mathews got the set point for the Lady Braves off an assist from Gonzalez.
This gave UNCP a 25-16 win in the set. They led from the beginning of the set all the way to the end.
Francis Marion built up a strong 16-9 lead in the second set and looked to be on their way to regaining the lead in the match, but the Lady Braves clawed back to make it close.
UNCP went on a 10-5 run to bring themselves within two points of the lead.
The Lady Braves maintained that momentum to score six of the last eight points to take the set 25-23 and take an advantage in the match 2-1.
Needing a win in the fourth set to keep the match alive, Francis Marion came out attacking to gain an early 9-4 lead.
The Black and Gold helped them along with four errors during that stretch.
With the score at 13-9 in favor of Francis Marion, the Lady Patriots went for the kill taking the next six points to build up an overwhelming 19-9 lead.
Carline Boone contributed two service aces during this stretch.
The set score would be 25-13 with the set point coming from a service ace by Alexandra Reed.
Francis Marion had tied up the match at two sets each.
The final set was controlled by the Lady Patriots most of the way through.
UNCP scored the opening point, but Francis Marion gained the lead and didn’t give it up the rest of the set.
An attack error by Mathews gave the Lady Patriots a 8-3 lead, and Francis Marion would hold at least close to a five point lead the rest of the set.
The match point came on a kill by Carlie Smith to give the Lady Patriots the 15-10 final set win and a 3-2 match victory.
Gonzalez led the game with 38 assists and registered a double-double by having 13 digs also. Ka’Asha Jefferies led the game with 22 digs and was one of two Lady Braves to have over 20 digs.
The other was Mathews.
Brandon and Mathews each posted double-digit kills for UNCP.
They had 13 and 10 respectively.
Reed led Francis Marion with 22 kills and reached a double-double by getting 11 digs as well.
Smith scored 12 kills in the match for the Lady Patriots and Jessica Amador led the team with 18 digs.
