Ben Jacobs Leads UNCP Basketball Over Allen
By Cody Parker, Sports Editor
The UNCP men’s basketball team moved to 5-0 on the season when they defeated Allen on Nov. 24 by a score of 82-65.
The game was close for the majority of the first half, but the Black and Gold went on a 14-6 run to give themselves a 37-27 lead. Ben Jacobs and Brandon Winford started the rally off.
Jacobs made a layup and Winford followed that up with one of his own and then converted a free-throw.
Jacobs came off the bench to score 20 points and grab 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action.
He had the game-high in both of those statistical categories.
Winford had 16 points and six rebounds.
The Braves went into halftime with a 44-35 lead, but they built on that lead early in the second half. Brandon Watts scored the first four points of the second half to grow UNCP’s lead to 13 points.
Watts finished the game with 14 points, four blocks, six steals and six rebounds.
The closest Allen would come to getting back in the game was when they pulled to within nine of the lead with five minutes left to play.
Free-throws by Derrick McCord were what got them to within nine.
The Black and Gold immediately responded with a 12-point run to put the lead out of reach, though. Winford had five points during that stretch.
Emaray Johnson led Allen with 15 points on five of seven shooting from the field. He was really effective from beyond the arc as he hit four of his six three-point shot attempts.
McCord finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds for Allen.
UNCP took advantage of Allen’s 18 turnovers by scoring 27 points off those turnovers.
