ABOUT UNCP

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke is a public institution located in a rural community in Robeson County. This county is the political and cultural center of North Carolina’s largest Native American tribe—the Lumbees. Opened as a normal school for Indians in 1887, the school began offering college classes in 1930 and was named Pembroke State College for Indians in 1941. In 1972, Pembroke State University became a constituent of the University of North Carolina system, and its name was changed to UNC at Pembroke in 1996. Today, it still serves a large American Indian population. UNCP “Where the learning gets personal” is home to approximately 6,200 students.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO UNCP

UNCP is located in Robeson County in southeastern North Carolina and is approximately 10 miles from the intersection of Interstate 74 and Interstate 95 at Lumberton. The University is approximately 1.5 hours south of Raleigh and 1.5 hours north of the North and South Carolina beaches and two hours east of Charlotte.

The University's physical address is:
1 University Drive, Pembroke, NC 28372.

 

From Raleigh, NC, Fayetteville, NC, and points north:

• Take I-95 south to Exit 17.
• Turn right onto N.C. Highway 711.
• Continue straight through the stop light and travel about 10 miles to Pembroke.
• Follow N.C. Highway 711 through Pembroke until you reach the fifth stop light.
• UNCP is on the right.

From Charlotte, NC, Laurinburg, NC, and points west:

• Take Interstate 74 east to Exit 200 (Pembroke/Red Springs/N.C. Highway 710).
• Turn left onto N.C. Highway 710 West.
• Follow N.C. Highway 710 about two miles to a traffic light at U.S. Highway 74. Continue straight through the light.
• Follow N.C. Highway 710 about one mile to a traffic light.
• Continue straight through this light (the road will change to N.C. Highway 711 South).
• Continue straight two more miles. Take a left at the second traffic light. UNCP is on the left.

From Wilmington, NC, and points east:

• Take Interstate 74 west to Exit 200 (Pembroke/Red Springs/N.C. Highway 710).
• Turn left onto N.C. Highway 710 West.
• Follow N.C. Highway 710 about two miles to a traffic light at U.S. Highway 74. Continue straight through the light.
• Follow N.C. Highway 710 about one mile to a traffic light.
• Continue straight through this light (the road will change to N.C. Highway 711 South).
• Continue straight two more miles. Take a left at the second traffic light. UNCP is on the left.

From Savannah, GA, Florence, SC, and points south:

• Take I-95 north to Exit 17.
• Turn left onto N.C. Highway 711.
• Continue straight through the light and travel about 10 miles to Pembroke.
• Follow N.C. Highway 711 through Pembroke until you reach the fifth stop light.
• UNCP is on the right.

Parking is available immediately adjacent to the facilities serving the 110th Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Academy of Science.

HISTORY

On March 7, 1887, Croatan Normal School was established after legislation sponsored by Representative Hamilton McMillan of Robeson County was enacted by the General Assembly of North Carolina. The law, which was in response to a petition from American Indians of the area, established a Board of Trustees and appropriated $500 to be used only for salaries.

A clapboard, two-story building was constructed by local Indians at a site about one mile west of the present location, and the school opened with 15 students and one teacher in the fall of 1887. For many years, the instruction was at the elementary and secondary level, and the first diploma was awarded in 1905. Learn more about the institution's rich heritage by clicking here.

LANDMARKS AND POINTS OF INTEREST

UNC Pembroke is a campus full of landmarks and points of interest that include the arrowhead, located in front of historic Old Main, the quad where students can be seen studying and the Lowry Bell Tower, which chimes the alma mater daily. To learn more, click here.

125th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (1887-2012)

March 7, 2012 marked the 125th anniversary of the founding of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke!

On March 14, 2012, UNCP kicked off a 14-month celebration of the founding that will showcase the history and heritage of the university and the many notable accomplishments and contributions of its students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The theme for the celebration is "Honoring Our Heritage, Soaring Toward Our Future!"
