The Museum of the Native American Resource Center is pleased to introduce our new exhibit, Sacred Hoop: Canadian First Nations Art. The Multimedia exhibit will highlight artwork from the north and western coast of Canada. A few of the tribes represented in the exhibit include the Inuit, Coast Salish, Tsimshian and the Haida people.
The works included in this exhibit are part of a collection assembled by Dr. Terrence Brayboy. Dr. Brayboy began collecting art as a child after being introduced to reservations and pueblos of the southwestern United States by his parents.
“As a collector I often search out the art that is the most honest and beautifully told. Sometimes this is not necessarily the most obviously beautiful work, but one that is elegant, honest and true to its purpose. When you buy the best art by native people, you are not buying decoration, you are buying culture. To fill my home with the culture of the Inuit and Northwest Coast people has been a distinct honor.” – Dr. Terrence Brayboy
Sacred Hoop: Canadian First Nations Art will opened on Thursday, October 11, 2007 and will be on display through Friday, January 11, 2008. A reception for the show was held on Thursday, October 11th, at 7:00 pm, in the Native American Resource Center on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
For more information on the exhibit contact the Resource Center at 910-521-6282.
