Overview of Peer Mentor Program:

The Native American-serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTI) program operated by the U.S. Department of Education provides grants to eligible institutions of higher education to enable them to improve their academic quality, increase their self sufficiency and strengthen their capacity to serve students.

The NASNTI Transfer Transition Program is geared at welcoming, enhancing, and supporting all transfer transition students from diverse backgrounds.  Through our Peer Mentor Program, transfer students will have the opportunity to work with experienced students at UNCP to have a better grasp and ease of transitioning into the university. Special emphasis will be placed on academic advising, tutoring and building a sense of community among this student population.

Peer Mentor Purpose:

The peer mentoring relationship is designed to foster a network of support for transfer students, particularly our Native American population. Mentors serve as peer support personnel for these transfer students (Mentees) and share program goals and responsibilities aimed at ensuring the retention of these particular student groups.

Goals:

To aid in the academic, emotional and socio-cultural adjustment for transfer students for college life at UNCP.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Act as big brother/sister to the Mentees and help ease these students transition from smaller colleges to university life.
  •  Network with campus officials and community leaders to provide relevant programming for the transfer student population, i.e workshops on UNCP policy and procedure, registering for classes, campus resources, etc.
  • Contacting former UNCP transfer students to conduct survey on their experiments at UNCP.
  • Keeping up with current, 1st yr, transfer students to provide support and links to relevant resources.
  • Meet with assigned mentees twice a month in person and not by telephone, Facebook, or email. If a mentee is having difficulty, additional visits may be required.
  • Refer any mentee having difficulties to appropriate university services and resources.
  • Carry out all duties promptly and responsibly with honesty and integrity and honor confidential information.
  • Maintain all dignity and integrity of the Peer Mentor program with the mentees and mentors and the campus community.
  • Accept constructive feedback and notify the Peer Mentor Program staff of any extenuating circumstances that interfere with performing mentor duties.
