mr. aaron vandermeer
Aaron Vandermeer is the director of Jazz Studies and Music Business
at the University of North Carolina, Pembroke. His classroom
responsibilities include Jazz Improvisation I & II, Jazz History,
Jazz Composition, Jazz Pedagogy and Music Theory. He also supervises
student internships in Music Business and coordinates the Moore Hall
Recital Series. Ensembles under his direction include the University
Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo and the recently formed Rhythm 'n Blues
Ensemble.
Mr. Vandermeer is a Doctoral Candidate in Brass Literature and
Pedagogy at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in
Bloomington, Indiana, where he also received his Master of Music
degree in Jazz Studies. His doctoral minors are in Jazz and Music
Theory. He has also received degrees from Kutztown University (BA -
Music), and Moorhead State University (BA - Biology; Chemistry
minor). While at Indiana University, Mr. Vandermeer taught as an
Associate Instructor to David Baker in the Jazz Department for four
years. In addition to his six years of study with David Baker, he
was also a student of Pat Harbison and Steve Houghton in the jazz
department. His primary trumpet teachers have included John Rommel,
William Adam, Joey Tartell, Dominic Spera and Kevin Kjos.
As an active scholar, specializing in the area of New Orleans Brass
Band music, his current projects in progress include a document
entitled "The Effects of Hurricane Katrina on the Brass Bands of New
Orleans," and a transcription, analysis and biographical research
project on the great New Orleans trumpeter Leroy Jones.
Mr. Vandermeer brings a diverse performing experience to UNCP in the
areas of jazz, funk, musical theater, R&B, and classical music.
Notable groups he has performed with include the David Baker Big
Band, The Impalas, The Mustard Cats, The Dorsey Brothers Big
Band,Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, The Dynamics, Goza, and Mojai,
to name a few. He was also the featured cell phone soloist for David
Baker's Concertino for Cell Phones and Orchestra, which has been
performed in Chicago, Prague and Columbia, MO. He has previously
taught Jazz and Applied Trumpet at Albright College in Reading, PA.
Originally from northwestern Minnesota, he is an avid Twins and
Vikings fan. He also enjoys playing softball, golf, racquetball,
ultimate frisbee, card games, and nearly every board game ever
invented with the exception of Pictionary.
