Dr. Janita K. Byars

Janita Byars began her professional career as solo clarinetist with the American Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Leopold Stokowski. She performed in solo recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City, in community venues throughout New York State, and at UNCP. She has her doctorate from Teachers College of Columbia University and degrees from Pace University, Manhattan School of Music, and Indiana University, where she was also awarded a Performer's Certificate in clarinet. Her career in public education included city-wide coordination of the Arts in General Education program in New York City, high school administration, and district-wide arts supervision including the position of director of the arts for the Rochester (NY) City School District. She has given workshops for professional organizations, state-wide and nationally, on online instruction, rubrics construction, self-reflection, and curricular integration in the arts.

She has two sons, Michael (a former soloist with the New York City Ballet who subsequently earned degrees from Fordham University and New York University School of Law) and Christopher (a professional jazz tenor saxophonist, composer, and arranger).
