Mr. david barkley

David Barkley received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Southeastern University in Lakeland Florida in May 1985.  After marrying and teaching in a private school in Orange Park Florida the following year, he moved to his hometown in Wilmington, North Carolina.  Here Mr. Barkley was the Director of Music at two area churches before beginning his career in public education.  

In December of 2005, Mr. Barkley received his Master of Arts degree in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.  He is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Music Education from Boston University.

Mr. Barkley is now completing his 20th year in Columbus County public schools as Director of Bands in the Southern and Western areas.  During these 19 years, he has directed several music programs including High School Instrumental and Vocal Music, Middle School Instrumental and Vocal Music,  Drum Lines, Color Guards, General Music K-5 classes, and served as the director of the Instrumental Music Program for the Southern area schools.  His bands have consistently received superior ratings at concert band festivals.  Mr. Barkley has served as mentor to initially certified teachers, and as adjudicator in county, district, and state honors band auditions.  Additional activities include serving as board member of the Southeastern District Bandmasters Association, organizer of the Stallion Classic Marching Band Festival, member and substitute director of the Tabor City Baptist Church handbell choir, Director of the Columbus All-County Band, Director of the Bladen All-County Band, multiple recipient of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and multiple recipient of Who's Who in America.  Organizational affiliations include the National Association of Music Educators, the Southeastern District Bandmasters Association, and the North Carolina Association of Educators.     

Mr. Barkley is currently an Adjunct Professor of Music Appreciation at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in addition to teaching in Columbus County.  He resides in Tabor City, North Carolina with his wife Cheri, who is also a teacher and mentor with the Columbus County School system.
