Band

Q: Is the Spirit of the Carolinas a class?
A: Yes, the Spirit of the Carolinas is a regular University course.

Q: What is the course number?
A: The UNCP Marching Band course numbers in the University Schedule of Courses are MUS 1181 (Winds - Spitzer; Percussion - Wiggins; Guard - DeFalco). All of the courses have the same class meeting times. Students will get 1 credit hour for participation in band.

Q: How are grades determined for the Spirit of the Carolina's?
A: Grades are based on attendance, performance and attitude.

Q: Do band members purchase their own shoes?
A: Yes, band members must purchase their own band shoes. Shoes for the hornline and drumline should be black lace up marching band shoes with no other markings or colors (NOT Tennis Shoes). Appropriate shoes can be purchased at www.fjminc.com or www.bandshoppe.com for around $30.

Q: How can parents be involved?
A: There is no formal organization for interested parents or alumni. From time to time, we may request a parent's help in an area of their expertise.

Q: Where can band members find the other rules and regulations for the Spirit of the Carolina's?
A: All students will receive a Spirit of the Carolina's Band Manual which lists all the rules and standards for membership in the band.

Q: What happens if a band member misses a rehearsal?
A: Conflicts that cause students to miss rehearsal are dealt with on an individual bases. Generally, students may miss one rehearsal a week due to conflicts with other classes (not work or other conflicts). Students must present their schedule to the staff to be excused. If a student cannot register for Marching Band because of a conflict, see the Performing Arts Secretary for a "Permission To Enroll" form. While we generally discourage students from participating in Spirit without being enrolled in the course, we understand that there are situations where this may be necessary. These requests are handled on an individual basis.

Q: Can students from area Community Colleges participate in the Spirit of the Carolina's?
A: Yes. Students may register for band as a non-degree seeking student through the UNCP Admissions Office. These students are not eligible for scholarships or stipend awards.

Q: Does Spirit march flutes or piccolos?
A: Both. Piccolos will be chosen by audition and limited to 1 or 2. We have a limited number of school owned piccs available for student use, but they are on a first-come-first-served basis. If you absolutely have no access to a piccolo, please contact the Band Office.

Q: Are there any auditions prior to Camp?
A: There are no formal auditions for the hornline prior to camp - only auditions for part assignments during camp. All winds must play an audition consisting of UNCP Fight Song and Hail UNCP from memory on the first day of band camp. This will determine if anyone will be moved to "alternate" status. You must be familiar with this music in order to successfully show your true abilities at the audition.

If you have completed an online interest or hard copy interest form, you will be sent information regarding your specific section and requirements for audition.

Q: Does the Office of Residence Life allow early move in for Band Camp?
A: Yes! The UNCP Office of Residence Life is working closely with the Band Office to ensure that everyone who is scheduled to live in a residence hall or University Place will have living quarters for camp.

Q:How much time does Marching Band take? Will I have the time?
A: Weekly rehearsals are scheduled from 3:30pm - 6:00 Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Drumline and colorguard meet at 3:30 on rehearsal days. Sectionals may be called by the section leader and will be announced during rehearsal. Students rarely drop Marching Band because of time problems. It is an important part of their day that does not demand too much time

Q: How many performances does the Marching Band have?
A: The marching band performs at all home football games, area parades, marching contests and for university functions. On average the band performs about 8 times a year.

Q: What if I have a class conflict with Marching Band?
A: If a class conflict cannot be avoided, don't assume that you cannot participate! Contact Mr. Spitzer and he will explain the possibilities that you have. We want everyone to be member!

Q: What is the cost to be in Marching Band?
A: Students must purchase a Marching Band T-Shirt, which is worn underneath the uniform and black marching shoes. The average cost for these items is approximately $40.00, depending on the quantity you order.

Q: How do I get into Spirit Band (Basketball Band)

Q: When is band camp?
A: Band camp takes place the week before classes start. Meals are covered for the students during this time, and they are allowed to move in to their housing early..

Q: Is camp required?
A:Band camp is required for membership in the UNCP Marching Band.

Q: Are instruments provided?
A:There are instruments available for checkout by all UNCP Marching Band members.

Q: Are stipends Available?
A: YES !!!!!! Stipends can range up to $400 a semester for participation in marching band. But if one of the first questions you ask about band is "how much will I get paid" the Spirit of the Carolina's may not be for you.

Q:What else do I need to Know?
A: Read the marching band handbook. This will describe the rehearsal procedures, as well as allowing you to get a head start learning our marching technique.
