Q: Is the Spirit of the Carolinas
a class?
A: Yes, the Spirit of the Carolinas is a regular University course.
Q: What is the course number?
A: The UNCP Marching Band course numbers in the University Schedule of
Courses are MUS 1181 (Winds - Spitzer; Percussion - Wiggins; Guard - DeFalco). All of the
courses have the same class meeting times. Students will get 1 credit
hour for participation in band.
Q: How are grades determined for the Spirit of
the Carolina's?
A: Grades are based on attendance, performance and attitude.
Q: Do band members purchase their own shoes?

with no other markings or colors (NOT Tennis Shoes). Appropriate shoes
can be purchased at www.fjminc.com or www.bandshoppe.com for around
$30.
Q: How can parents be involved?

time to time, we may request a parent's help in an area of their expertise.
Q: Where can band members find the other rules
and regulations for the Spirit of the Carolina's?
A: All students will receive a Spirit of the Carolina's Band Manual which
lists all the rules and standards for membership in the band.
Q: What happens if a band member misses a rehearsal?
A: Conflicts that cause students to miss rehearsal are dealt with on an
individual bases. Generally, students may miss one rehearsal a week due
to conflicts with other classes (not work or other conflicts). Students
must present their schedule to the staff to be excused. If a student cannot
register for Marching Band because of a conflict, see the Performing Arts
Secretary for a "Permission To Enroll" form. While we generally
discourage students from participating in Spirit without being enrolled
in the course, we understand that there are situations where this may
be necessary. These requests are handled on an individual basis.
Q: Can students from area Community Colleges participate
in the Spirit of the Carolina's?
A: Yes. Students may register for band as a non-degree seeking student
through the UNCP Admissions Office. These students are not eligible for
scholarships or stipend awards.
Q: Does Spirit march flutes or piccolos?
A: Both. Piccolos will be chosen by audition and limited to 1 or 2. We have a limited number
of school owned piccs available for student use, but they are on a first-come-first-served
basis. If you absolutely have no access to a piccolo, please contact the
Band Office.
Q: Are there any auditions prior to Camp?
A: There are no formal auditions for the hornline prior to camp - only auditions
for part assignments during camp. All winds must play an audition consisting of UNCP Fight Song and Hail UNCP from memory on the first day of band camp. This will determine if anyone will be moved to "alternate" status. You
must be familiar with this music in order to successfully show your true
abilities at the audition.
Drumline and Colorguard click here for audition information.
If you have completed an online interest or hard copy interest form, you will be sent information regarding your specific section and requirements for audition.
