UNCP “Spirit of the Carolinas”
Band Camp Information Packet

Director’s Welcome:
I would like to welcome you to the marching band "family" at UNCP.With your dedication and enthusiasm it promises to be an exciting, rewarding, and enjoyable season of marching band at UNCP! Recruitment has been going well and if all those who have made a commitment to participate in the marching band actually materialize we will have between 110-130 take the field with us this season. I pledge to do all I can to make our group sound great, look fine, and take pride in the organization. I hope you will all give us your best effort to set the bar high for each “UNCP Spirit of the Carolinas” Marching Band member that follows literally in your footsteps!

Report Times:
If you are a member of the drum line, color guard, or have been designated as a student leader of any section of the marching band your report date for band camp is Monday, August 10th.  Those who are living on campus for the upcoming semester will move directly into your actual rooming assignments. You will report between 9:00-10:30 a.m. to the lobby outside the band room in Moore Hall to check-in and receive your room keys. If you are commuting or living in off campus non-UNCP housing you will not be needed until 1:00 pm.
The first meeting will be in the Moore Hall Auditorium between 1:00-2:00 p.m. Each section will then go immediately to a rehearsal or planning session as announced with your staff member.

If you are a woodwind or brass player your check-in day is Wednesday, August 12, between 9:00-10:30 am. You will pick up your residence hall key in the lobby outside the band room in Moore Hall. If you are commuting or living in off campus housing you will not be needed until 1:00 pm.

Your first commitment as a wind player will be an audition for Mr. Spitzer and Dr. Altman beginning at 1:00 pm in room 139 Moore Hall. You may warm-up for your audition in the auditorium and the section leaders will call sections down to be heard. Your audition is UNCP Fightsong and Hail UNCP FROM MEMORY! This audition will allow the instrumental director's to evaluate the proficiency of the band and determine if any student needs to be moved to an "alternate" rather than "performing member" of the band.

*Note- If you have off campus housing either in apartments, duplexes, or other housing arrangements, it is your responsibility to contact the housing officials to make sure that they know you are arriving early for the school year to participate in UNCP Marching Band.

Meals:
The marching band will be eating meals during band camp in the Chavis University Center Dining Hall. Your meals and campus housing are paid for by the university band budget! Breakfasts will be available beginning at 6:30 a.m. Lunches will be served at 12:00 noon. Supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. nightly. You will report to an attendant upon entering the dining hall and check your name off the band roster prior to entering and eating!
The first meal available will be supper on your designated report date!

Instrument Check-out:
Any student who needs a school owned instrument to use for the season, including all marching mello-phones, baritones, tubas, or other marching brass or woodwind instrument should either contact Mr. Spitzer or Daren Sellers any week day prior to camp at Moore Hall on the UNCP Campus. You may also check-out school owned instruments upon check-in for room keys, between 9:00-10:30 am.  Instrument check-out will be in Moore Hall!  Percussion instrument assignments will be made at the first meeting.

Fees & Money$$$$:
Unlike the high school band experience, there is no fee associated with participation in the UNCP Marching Band. In fact the only expense associated with participation is for you to secure a pair of black band shoes. We are trying to get all members switched over to the “Plus One” Band Shoe , available from FJM Inc. However, if you already have a black band shoe from high school, and wish to continue with it, you may! I do ask that it not be a gym shoe or patent leather (ultra shiny) finish!

Summer uniforms for band will consist of the Official Marching Band T-shirt available for purchase at the UNCP Bookstore ($10.00) and a pair of khaki shorts!

The guard will purchase the new official guard warm-up jacket from the bookstore ($25.00), a white pocket T-shirt, and wear a pair of tasteful black shorts.

You will of course need some spending money for any free time activities during camp.  We also stress that you take good care of the equipment, facilities, uniforms, instruments that are assigned to you, especially since you are paying nothing for their use!

What Should I Bring to camp?

  • Comfortable clothing (shorts, t-shirts, warm-ups, lightweight pants, etc) suitable for marching, dance work, stretching, calisthenics.
  • 2 pair of comfortable and “broken-in” gyms shoes suitable for marching,

Note- we may be painting some coordinates for drill sets, so you may not want to have new or newer gyms shoes on, just in case they get paint on them.

  • A light weight jacket, windbreaker, or sweatshirt if we should unexpectedly be blessed with an uncharacteristically cool evening, or if you get cold in the air-conditioning during sectional or full band rehearsals.
  • All Instrumentalists should bring their downloaded music from the web site, electronic tuners, reeds, valve oil and necessary accessory items.
  • All members should bring sun screen, insect repellant, lip saver.
  • All members should bring sun glasses, visor or ball cap.
  • All members should bring three ring binders with numerous transparent windows for music, drill sheets and instructions sheets.
  • All members should have several sharpened pencils for the week.
  • Bring all necessary toiletries: toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant!
  • You may wish to have a camera since we all will be meeting new friends and making memories.
  • There will be a few drill rehearsals where I tell the guard to wear Plain Black  Pocket T-Shirts and the Band Proper to Wear Plain White Pocket T-Shirts. So that I can determine drill positions and clarity. Please have a couple of your color with you at camp!
  • Bring an attitude of “What ever it takes!” Please leave the complaining negative attitudes checked at the Robeson County Line!!

Sheet Music and Band Handbook Downloads:

Please download the sheet music for your instrument and begin working on the music before coming to camp! Also, familiarize your self with the band hand book. Remember at least Fight song and Hail UNCP should be memorized by report day!
