UNCP Percussion colloquy questions

These are samples of the questions that will be asked of percussion majors during the colloquy portion of the Evaluation Forum.

1. Identify at least two major performers on each of the following instruments: drum set; marimba; percussion; ethnic percussion

2. Name three orchestral pieces that feature significant percussion parts and their composers. Include what is significant about the parts.

3. Identify the first major compositions, composers and dates of composition for the following instruments: multiple-percussion; marimba; timpani (in an orchestral score); solo timpani

4. Identify the following composers who have been significant to the development of percussion and discuss why they are important: John Cage; Elliott Carter; Keiko Abe; Darius Milhaud

5. Identify the principal percussionist and timpanist for the following orchestras: New York Philharmonic; Boston Symphony; Chicago Symphony; Cleveland Orchestra; Philadelphia Orchestra.

Most answers can be found in the James Blades book Percussion Instruments and their History. Other answers can be found on-line and have also been covered in studio classes. In addition students should have filled out the composition research form on all works they have prepared and be capable of answering questions from that form.
