Audition requirements
UNCP PERCUSSION AUDITION REQUIREMENTS - Undergraduate and Graduate Thesis Track
All students wishing to major in music with a percussion emphasis or to perform with the UNCP Percussion Ensemble must audition. Suggested repertoire is as follows:
Snare Drum:
1 rudimental solo - Hurley, Pratt, etc.
1 concert solo or etude - Cirone, Delecluse, Lepak, Firth, etc.
Play a concert style roll which crescendos from piano to fortissimo, and
decrescendos back to piano over one minute.
Excerpts are not required but are recommended.
Keyboards:
1 two mallet solo or etude - ragtime solos, all state etudes, etc.
1 four mallet solo (not required, but highly recommended)
Major scales and arpeggios - 2 octaves
Excerpts are not required but are recommended.
Timpani:
1 solo or etude - Firth, Goodman, Hinger, Beck, etc.
Timpani excerpts are not required, but are again recommended.
Tuning and pitch matching will be tested.
Drum set and ethnic percussion are not required for the audition.
Keyboard and/or snare drum sight reading will be required of all who audition. If it is determined that a student has a deficiency in sightreading skills they will be required to participate in lab band (Fridays at 8:00 am) to correct the deficiency.

All works selected should be at a senior recital level of difficulty. See jury levels for further examples.
Snare Drum:
1 work in the concert style. Examples: Noble Snare Works; Delecluse; Nexus Works.
Excerpts: Rimsky-Korsakov - Scheherezade
Prokofiev - Lt. Kije
Play a concert style roll which crescendos from piano to fortissimo, and decrescendos back to piano over one minute.
Keyboards:
1 four mallet solo work. Examples: Bach;
Abe; Tanaka; Smadbeck
Excerpts: Gershwin - Porgy and Bess
Shostakovich - Polka
All major and minor scales, two octaves with arpeggios
I-IV-V-IV-V7-I chord progression in all major keys
Timpani:
1 solo recital work. Examples: Carter; Williams; Brun; Bergamo; Beck; Cahn
Excerpts: Schuman - Be Glad Then America
Tchaikovsky - Symphony no. 4
Tuning and pitch matching will be tested.
Auxiliary
Excerpts: Tchaikovsky - Symphony no. 4 - Cymbals
Drumset/World Percussion
1 work for drum set and/or ethnic percussion . This can be a solo work for drumset, hand-drums, steel drum, etc.
Keyboard and/or snare drum sight reading will be required of all who audition.

DRUMSET MAJORS
Students in either of the BA degrees may choose drumset as their prinicpal instrument. There will be sightreading of both drumset charts and snare drum music on the audition.

Demonstrate the following styles with a “play along” CD music track
1) 12 Bar Blues Shuffle (w/ backbeat on 2 & 4)
2) 12 Bar Blues Jazz/Swing Time, Medium Tempo (“Freddie the Freeloader”)
3) Bossa Nova. High Hat, then Ride Cymbal, High Hat on 2 & 4.
(“Girl from Ipanema”, “Blue Bossa”)
4) Funk/R&B Groove (“Cold Sweat”, James Brown)
5) Afro Cuban Mambo (“Mambo Inn”)
6) 6/8 Afro Cuban Bembe (“Footprints”)
TECHNIQUE
1) 3 Bars of Funk Groove, 1 Bar Fill
2) Paradiddle, Double Paradiddle, Paradiddle-Diddle
3) 5, 6, 9 stroke rolls
READING
1) Read example IB, IIA from New Breed by Gary Chester
a) on snare drum only
b) with Bass Drum, over 8ths on the high hat
2) Read Syncopation Solo #1 from Ted Reed with swing 8ths over Jazz Ride, High Hat on 2 & 4
