Scale Fingerings:

General Rules: 4^th finger only plays once per octave; thumbs never play black notes

Major Scales:

Group One – C, G, D, A, E, F

Fingering RH – 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 4 (F: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3)

Fingering LH – 1, 4, 3, 2, 1, 3, 2

( 5^th finger may be used on lowest LH note and highest RH note.)

Group Two – B, F#, C#

Fingering RH and LH - 2 & 3 play groups of two black notes; 2, 3, & 4 play groups of three black notes, thumbs play white notes

Group Three – B-flat, E-flat, A-flat

Fingering RH – 4 plays B-flat

Fingering LH – 3, 2, 1, 4, 3, 2, 1

Harmonic Minor Scales:

Group One – c, g, d, a, e, f,

Fingering exactly like Major Scales

Group Two – b, f#, c#

b: exactly like B major scale

f# fingering RH and LH: 3 & 4 play groups of two black notes; 1 & 2 play groups of two white notes; 3 plays single black note

c# fingering RH and LH: 3 plays tonic and dominant, 1 plays mediant,

Group Three – b-flat, e-flat, a-flat

b-flat: 2 & 3 play groups of two black notes; 2, 3, & 4 play groups of three black notes, thumbs play white notes C and F, even though raised 7^th causes A to be natural

e-flat: 2 & 3 play groups of two black notes; 2, 3, & 4 play groups of three black notes, thumbs play white notes F and B, even though raised 7^th causes to be D natural

a-flat: exactly like A-flat major
