Department of Music

 The UNC Pembroke Tuba Euphonium Ensemble provides students with the opportunity to get together as a group and play challenging chamber music repertoire which gives us the melodies we crave.  If you haven’t heard a group of a dozen (or more!) tubas and euphoniums playing together, it is one of the richest and most gorgeous sounds imaginable.  Students rehearse each week and present concerts each semester, including the fall Octubafest, an evening of celebration with a German theme that you won’t want to miss!

   The ensembles, under the direction of Dr. Joanna Hersey and Dr. David Krosschell, perform a wide variety of repertoire from Gregorian chant to ragtime, Mozart to Ives, and a modern repertoire of pieces written for the instrumentation (which Mozart would have done, if only he’d thought of it).

 For students, these ensembles are an opportunity to learn chamber music in a unique setting. Tuba Euphnium Ensembles give students repertoire that many never knew existed...while also solidifying the camaraderie of the studio and developing chamber music skills.  The opportunity to perform in chamber settings allows students to develop stronger listening skills, and provides a chance to work on issues of ensemble and intonation, which the students can then carry over into their concert band and orchestral sections.
