The Media Integration Project (MI Project) introduces an element of newness
and innovation into the College of Arts & Sciences
as well as the University as a whole. This interdisciplinary academic effort
between the departments of art, music
and mass communications is unprecedented at UNCP.
As noted by Dr. Roger Brown, UNCP's Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic
Affairs, "The very essence of university education and research must
include the emerging variety of communications and artistic media that will
shape our society and global dialogue in the twenty-first century." It
is exactly this melding of new media with traditional studio education in
these disciplinary areas that is the focus of the MI Project.

Media Integration (MI) is a cooperative, co-offered
course taught by the faculty from Art, Music and Mass Communication departments.
The purpose of this course is to offer an interdisciplinary, team-taught curriculum
that integrates digital video, audio, animation and graphics in a student
centered studio environment. MI 380 is an opportunity for interdisciplinary
study in three academic departments: Art, Mass Communications and Music. Projects
and assignments emphasize various aspects of applied information technologies
(IT) often termed ‘multimedia.’ Instruction in the use of both
hardware and software emphasizes the following areas: still digital image-making,
digital photography, computer-based printing, digital audio recording and
editing, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), digital animation, and
digital videography and editing. The intent of the course is to integrate
the digital technologies of Art, Music and Mass Communication Departments
in order to provide instruction and production opportunities in multimedia
content.

Media Integration Production, is an opportunity for further
interdisciplinary study in three academic departments: Art, Mass Communications
and Music. Projects and assignments emphasize the production of digital content
for multimedia projects. Products will be from the areas of: still digital
image-making, digital photography, computer-based printing, digital audio
recording and editing, MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), digital
animation, and digital videography and editing. Students will have intensive
hands-on experience in each area, resulting in an understanding of the techniques
and concepts involved in the design and implementation of multimedia
projects. Both individual and group assignments can be expected.

Projects in Media Integration. This course is an opportunity
for advanced interdisciplinary study in three academic departments: Art, Mass
Communications and Music. Assignments emphasize the design and integration
of digital content for multimedia projects. Students will propose and prototype
a project, and participate in the team development of a final project. Students
will also be assigned roles in the creative decision-making and work involved
in proposals under development and/or consideration in the UNCP Media Integration
Project. Products will be expected to relate to the three essential aspects
of the University mission: teaching, research and service and have the potential
to serve as professional examples for student portfolios.
