Dr. Jason Hutchens, Assistant Professor and Chair Jason joined the Mass Communication Department faculty in Fall 2009. He teaches courses in broadcasting, video production, and mass communication. He has more than 15 years of experience in the field of video/multimedia production. Jason has worked in broadcast, higher education, freelance, and corporate communications environments. Before joining the UNCP faculty, Jason worked five years as a manager of internal communications for Orlando-based Darden Restaurants: a Fortune 400 company which owns the popular Red Lobster and Olive Garden brands, among others. His research interests include mobile video technologies, multimedia education and training tools, aesthetics and style in video/multimedia programming, and the impact of communication technologies on organizational culture.

Dr. Anthony R. Curtis, Professor Tony has broad media experience including newspapers, magazines, broadcast, books, public relations, advertising, and online. He teaches journalism, public relations, broadcasting and mass communication courses. He is known for his New Media and social media work including construction of UNCP's campus in the virtual world Second Life. On his faculty website, Tony's Resources for Courses page is an array of documents and links he has created in support of mass media/mass communication courses. He also presents galleries of student pictures from his photojournalism classes, issues of the Brave News World magazine from his Web journalism course, the Professional Profiles print magazine from his feature writing class, Brave Voices from his editorial writing class, investigative journalism articles from the capstone course, and digital storytelling videos and blogs by his students. He promotes student activity in a variety of New Media and social media communication technologies. Tony has authored 72 books and constructed three extensive web sites, including Space Today Online. He has written extensively about computers, technology, communication, space and astronomy. When major space events are in the news, he is interviewed by media such as CNN and Reuters. In 2004-2005, he volunteered to work with eighth graders at a local school measuring dust storms on Mars. Tony was chair of the Mass Communication Department and the university Faculty Senate. Tony has taught at Penn State, Ohio University, Salisbury University, Hood College, and Union Institute & University. He received UNCP's Outstanding Teaching Award. Students elected him Outstanding Academic Advisor and nominated him for Distinguished Faculty and Excellence In Teaching. He has been listed twice in Who's Who Among America's Teachers from student nominations. He received the Outstanding Program Award from Ohio University's College of Communication. Tony was honored for his web publication in 2004 by the American Library Association. When Tony came to UNCP in Summer 2002, he brought extensive administrative experience, including Executive Assistant to the President, Chief of Staff for the Office of the President, Director of the Center for Strategic Planning, and Dean for Academic Information Services at UI&U, as well as Director of the Maryland Summer Center for the Arts at Salisbury University. Dr. Judith G. Curtis, Associate Professor Judy started teaching at UNCP in Summer 2002. Today, she has 21 years university teaching experience. She received UNCP's Outstanding Teaching Award. She received the Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education. She was invited to present a workshop on "Ensuring Student Success in a Web-Based Course" for the Greater Cincinnati Consortium of Colleges and Universities. Beyond the classroom, Judy has 40 years professional writing, editing, graphic design, production and media management experience in newspaper, magazine and book publishing. She has been a Managing Editor of two national magazines and a book publishing company as well as Vice President of a publishing house where she supervised editorial, design, production, manufacturing and sales in addition to creation and design of national advertising campaigns and media placement. There are articles about Judy's professional and educational careers in the Professional Profiles magazine issues for 2004-2005 and Fall 2012. Judy teaches journalism, mass communication and public relations courses and advises the UNCP student newspaper, The Pine Needle. Terence Dollard, Assistant Professor Terence joined the Mass Communication Department faculty in Fall 2008. He teaches courses in television production, editing and writing. Working in television production since 1994 and higher education since 2003, Terence is experienced in producing, directing and editing in the studio and field. He has won awards for his work, including two Bronze Awards from the Long Island Advertising Council in 2008. Terence was Production Assistant for TCI Cable of Brookhaven, at that time part of the largest cable television provider in the nation. He became Production Manager, responsible for overseeing facilities and staff. While with TCI, Terence directed studio productions, including talk, infomercials and music/variety, as well as programs, PSAs and commercials shot on location. While with TCI, Terence won a Gilbert Award for Best Public Affairs Programming from the New York State Cable Television Association and two Folio Awards for Best Public Service Announcement from the Long Island Coalition for Fair Broadcasting. Terence joined the Public Relations and Marketing Group in 2001 as Vice-President of Digital Video Production. With PRMG, he planned advertising and marketing strategies for non-profit organizations, retailers, law firms, political campaigns and businesses. Terence continues to advise PRMG and to provide video production services. Terence worked as a freelancer in sports programming, including as audio engineer for Newsport Network's Scoreboard Central and director for WLNY-TV. As an independent producer, he provided video services for New York City's Central Park Summer Stage, produced and directed Act One, a sketch/music variety program and directed segments for the Princess Grace Awards, among other projects. Terence came to UNCP from the Department of Television and Radio at Brooklyn College where he was adjunct professor. Terence directed "The Mystery of Anna O," an adaptation of Jerome Coopersmith's stage play for Brooklyn College and segments of the 2007 President's Concert for CUNY-TV. M.F.A. George
Harrison, Assistant Professor George had 23 years professional public relations and marketing experience with for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in the healthcare and insurance industries before coming to UNCP in Spring 2003. George is APR certified (Accredited in Public Relations) by the Public Relations Society of America. In addition, he was editor of weekly newspapers in Tennessee and Mississippi. George received awards for his works from the Mississippi Press Association, the Tennessee Society of Healthcare Public Relations, and the Mid-Ohio Valley Chapter of the American Marketing Association. At UNCP, George teaches public relations and advertising courses, as well as mass communication core courses, and advises our chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). He previously was adjunct instructor at Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville Technical Community College, and the Duke University Certificate Program in Non-Profit Management. He conducted public relations workshops for Cross Country University of Nashville, a national provider of seminars and educational workshops for business and industry. Dr. Jamie Litty, Associate Professor Jamie has ten years experience in public radio and television in New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. She taught ten years in higher education and the non-profit sector before coming to UNCP in Fall of 2001. Here she teaches courses in video production, broadcast writing, and mass communication theory, law, and ethics. Jamie was chair of the Mass Communication Department for nine years. Jamie is an award-winning videomaker who has produced in a variety of corporate genres, with current research interests in health communication campaigns, grassroots uses of electronic media, and the future of jazz radio. She is adviser to the Mass Communication Department's live, weekly, student-produced TV newscast, Carolina News Today; a member of the Faculty Senate; a member of UNCP's Interpersonal Violence & Sexual Assault Response Team; chair of the Student Affairs & Campus Life Committee; and recipient of a 2011 UNCP Outstanding Teaching Award. In the community, Jamie is a member of the Marketing Advisory Committee for the Storytelling and Arts Center of the Southeast located in downtown Laurinburg and a member of the Carolinas Communication Association. She reviews manuscripts for the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media and is a faculty fellow of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Dr. Dandan Liu, Assistant Professor Dandan has six years of college-level teaching experience. Prior to joining UNCP in Fall 2005, she taught Introduction to Mass Media, Mass Media and Society, and Public Speaking at Temple University, Philadelphia. She has also worked as a volunteer in the Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation, a non-profit community organization, for three years. George
Johnson, Engineer, Lecturer George has been television engineer for WNCP-TV, the university's student-operated television station, since 1989. Previously, he had eight years experience as an engineer at commercial television stations. By 1996, he had earned two degrees from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and had started teaching broadcasting courses. In 1999, George co-founded the Media Integration Project, a collaboration among the departments of Art, Music and Mass Communication. Media Integration activities include:

Oswald, Lecturer Sara is a regular adjunct in the public relations sequence. She also serves as a full-time lecturer for UNCP teaching English.She is faculty adviser to the school yearbook, The Indianhead. She has been at UNCP since 1988. Sallyann
Clark, Broadcast & Emerging Media Manager - TV Producer/Director for WNCP-TV Sallyann has been with UNCP since January 1998. She brought with her years of experience working with students, administrators, and the public. She taught in several public school systems in the state prior to coming here to UNCP. She has experience in working with and assisting people both nationally and internationally. Sallyann’s duties focus on the daily operations of WNCP-TV. They vary from scheduling of and assisting with productions to the scheduling and airing of the programs on area broadcast and cable channels. She also assists students on broadcasts and supervises work study assistants. Sallyann currently serves on several campus committees and is active in community service work. Jennifer Carter, Administrative Secretary Jennifer joined the Mass Communication Department staff in 2005 after 13 years with the Public Schools of Robeson County. She is skilled in communicating with the deaf and hearing impaired. |
