Mathematics Awareness Week Proclamation
April 11-17, 2004
Whereas, the Joint Policy Board
for Mathematics has designated April 2004 as Mathematics Awareness Month,
with the theme "The Mathematics of Networks", to recognize that
mathematics is being used to study the interconnections of complex networks
arising in a variety of disciplines, including genetics, physics, epidemiology,
and economics; and
Whereas, progress in mathematical
understanding has been a key ingredient of progress in science, commerce
and the arts throughout history; and
Whereas, mathematics is increasingly
important to the progress of our economy and society, being indispensable
in such diverse fields as medicine, computer sciences, space exploration,
the skilled trades, business, defense, and government; and
Whereas, mathematical literacy
is essential for citizens to function effectively in society; and
Whereas, mathematical reasoning,
analysis, and problem solving are increasingly crucial skills for our
youth to learn as they prepare to lead productive and responsible lives;
and
Whereas, enrollment in mathematical
programs has been declining at all levels of the American education system;
Therefore, I, Allen C. Meadors,
Chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, do hereby
proclaim April 11-17, 2004 Mathematics Awareness Week, to be observed
by all this University in recognition of the importance of mathematics
and mathematics education. I have therefore subscribed my name hereunto,
on this the First day of April in the year of our Lord Two Thousand Four.
