Oscar R. Sampson
(1866-1928)

Oscar R. Sampson’s name has been associated with the University since its founding day. Born in 1866, he attended the first session of the Croatan Normal School in 1887.

Appointed to the Board of Trustees in 1896, he served the University faithfully for the next 32 years until his death in 1928. For 30 of those years, he was chairman of the board, and under his guidance, the school grew from one teacher to a two-year normal school with more than 500 students when its primary, secondary and normal students were combined. The value of school buildings grew from $1,000 in 1896 to $250,000 during Sampson’s tenure.

Sampson taught school for 40 years and was a Baptist minister. When he died, he was eulogized by N.C. Newbold, Superintendent of the North Carolina Department of Instruction, as “one of the best men I have ever known."

Sampson Hall, the University’s administration building, was dedicated to his memory in 1949. Although demolished in 1995, his name was not forgotten. In 1997, Sampson’s name was added to the newly remodeled and expanded Sampson-Livermore Library (now Livermore Library).

When planning began for a significant new campus building, the Board of Trustees agreed unanimously to name it in memory and honor of O.R. Sampson. The Oscar R. Sampson Academic Building proudly carries on the legacy of this influential leader of the University.
