ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Dr. McClanahan views teaching as a learner-centered activity and feels that a successful course is one in which both the students and the teacher increase and/or refine their knowledge and understanding of the covered material. She makes her students feel comfortable and lets them know that their ideas and opinions are expected, valued, and essential for a successful course. To allow for and encourage student participation, she tries to provide an environment based on mutual respect between her and the students and among the students. She favors classes in which discussion (both full class and small group) takes precedence over lecturing. Dr. McClanahan believes that both theory and practical applications of theory should be included in a course so that students can use what they have learned as a basis for future study or work.

Dr. McClanahan’s research interests include issues in both theoretical and applied linguistics. Her primary theoretical work has been on the pragmatics of negation in Korean. She has co-translated a number of Korean poems, published as Banner and Other Poems (by Chi Whan Yoo), and edited the English translation of two volumes (750 pages each) of the three-volume work which is the Korean government’s official record of the Korean War. Dr. McClanahan has over sixteen years experience teaching English as a second or foreign language at the undergraduate level. She has also taught courses in ESL methodology and second language acquisition at the graduate level.
