areas of competition
Listed below are areas of competition for the 2008 Miss UNC Pembroke Scholarship Pagreant.
I. PRIVATE INTERVIEW ………………….…. 25% OVERALL SCORE
Each contestant will have a PRIVATE INTERVIEW with the panel of judges. The interview will take place on the afternoon of JANUARY 25, 2007. Interviews are 10-minutes and 45-seconds and consist of a forty-five (45) second oral presentation/introduction by the contestant about herself personally, her goals, her community service, her aspirations, etc. followed by an 9-minute 15-second question and answer session. The question and answer segment will be followed by a forty-five (45) second closing statement by the contestant. Interviews take place "press conference" style with the contestant standing behind a podium in front of the seated judges panel. Interviews are terminated by the Chief Judge at the 10-minute 45-second mark regardless of whether the contestant is in the middle of her closing statement. Contestants may not move from behind the podium; however, they may move from side to side (never in front of) but they must be able to reach the podium at all times.
II. LIFESTYLE AND FITNESS IN SWIMSUIT COMPETITION.…....…..…........ 15% OVERALL SCORE
Contestants are judged on stage of physical fitness in swimsuit. The contestant may wear a one-piece or a two-piece swimsuit. All swim wear should be in good taste. No string bikinis or thongs will be allowed. NO CUSTOM MADE SWIMSUITS are allowed in local or state competition (Miss America rule). All swimsuits must be purchased from a department store and have a factory label. The Director and Coordinator of the local pageant should preview all swimsuits prior to show time. The contestant may or may not wear shoes. If she chooses to wear shoes, Miss America recommends that the heel be no higher than 3 1/2 inches.
III. TALENT COMPETITION..................................................................….... 35% OVERALL SCORE
Talent presentations are time-limited and may be no longer than 2 minutes
in length. If the contestant goes beyond the time limit of 2:00, she will
automatically be given a "1" as her score by all judges. Talent
presentations are normally performed in special attire or costume with
taped accompaniment. Only recorded accompaniments are allowed (NO LIVE
ACCOMPANIMENT). Special lighting and props must be useful as having some
bearings on the talent presentation, itself, in order to be approved.
Talent presentations may come from any category, i.e., musical, dance,
art, design, drama, etc. If a contestant prefers, she is allowed by the
Miss America Organization to present a 2 minute verbal essay in lieu of
a talent presentation.
IV. EVENING WEAR COMPETITION…….…….......……....................……...…
20% OVERALL SCORE
Contestants will compete in the evening wear of their choice. Evening
wear may be formal (floor length gown) or semi-formal (short or mid-length
cocktail dress, pants, etc.) at the discretion of the contestant. Judges
will not judge the contestant on the content of her choice alone. Judges
will be looking at how well the choice of attire compliments the girl
herself. Attire is not expected to be fully beaded or sequined. Your choice should reflect your personality and taste.
V. ON-STAGE
QUESTION.............................................................................
5% OVERALL SCORE
The On-Stage Interview phase of competition is designed for the contestant
to make an on-stage statement of her interests, opinions and aspirations.
Contestants will be evaluated based on their answers to the questions.
Judges will consider their overall “first impression” of the
contestant, her extemporaneous responses to the questions, whether or
not the question was answered in the context it was asked, if the contestant
can handle the pressure of speaking on stage in front of an audience,
and whether young people will see her as a role model who is reflective
of today’s generation.
