2006
- The Sampson-Livermore Library celebrated the arrival of spring,
when the Friends of the Library hosted “A
Springtime Showcase @ the Library!” on Friday,
April 21st at 6:00 p.m. The fifth annual benefit showcased the musical
talents of three Miss UNCPs who are current students. Exciting silent
and live auctions were held again, and as always, there was delicious
and tempting assortments of food for the guests.
- The UNCP Friends of the Library featured on February 7, 2006,
Gene Cheek author of Choice in the Jim Crow South,
speaking about his book with students and other interested campus
personnel in the UC Lounge at 3:30 p.m. and in the Sampson-Livermore
Library at 7:00 p.m. A reception and book signing followed the program.
The program was free and open to the public.
2005

The UNCP Friends of the Library featured a showcase of recent
publications from the Art Department on Wednesday, November 16th
in the Sampson-Livermore Library. Featured was Dr. Ann Horton-Lopez,
Dr. Tula Lightfoot, Mr. Ralph Steeds, and Mr. Blake Tyner. Books
were available for sale following author comments and during the
reception, both of which were free and open to the public.

The UNCP Friends of the Library featured Dr. Richard Kania, Professor
of Sociology, Social Work & Criminal Justice, and Dr. Thomas
Ross, Professor of Geography, Wednesday, November 30th, 10:00 a.m.
- 11:00 a.m. in the Main Reading Room of the Sampson-Livermore Library.
Dr. Kania discussed and signed his new book, "The 1605 Waymouth
Expedition to the Coast of Maine: An Assessment of the Rosier Text."
Dr. Ross discussed and signed the third edition of his atlas, "One
Land, Three Peoples: A Geography of Robeson County, North Carolina."
A reception was held during the book signing opportunity. The program
was free and open to the public.
- The UNCP Friends of the Library presented a program featuring
Dr. Melton A. McLaurin, UNC Wilmington Randall Library Fellow
and Professor Emeritus of History, who spoke on the topic "The
North Carolina State Fair: The State’s Oldest and Biggest
Annual Party" on October 27, 2005 at the Sampson-Livermore
Library. A question and answer session and a reception followed
Dr. McLaurin’s comments.

The UNCP Friends of the Library presented a program featuring author
and musician Clyde Edgerton on April 15th in the Sampson-Livermore
Library. Edgerton read from his own works and performed songs incorporated
in those works. A question and answer opportunity followed the performance,
as well as a reception and book signing by the author.
- The annual Friends of the Library benefit event, "A
Night of Stars @ the Library," was held on April 8th
in the Sampson-Livermore Library. The benefit featured Shelby
and Linda Stephenson, and local entertainer and library staff
member Tim Van Hooser. A silent auction was held
for over 100 autographed items such as photos and books, as well as
other items including North Carolina pottery, golf packages, original
artwork, and dining certificates. A live auction, led by Wendell Staton,
featured unique handmade needlework items, round trip airfare tickets
provided by Southwest Airlines, and several other items. All proceeds
benefit projects of the Friends of the Library of UNCP.
- The UNCP Friends of the Library and Robeson County Public Library
presented a program featuring author and speaker Dr. Barbara
Hammonds. Her newest book titled 50 POEMS
was written between 1994 and 2004 as she healed from traumatic injuries
she sustained in a 1992 accident. The poems featured in the book provide
a glimpse into Hammonds’ personal and professional lives and people
who helped shape her from childhood. The program featuring Dr. Hammonds,
a Lumberton native, was held in the Osterneck Auditorium across from
the Robeson County Public Library at 7:00pm on December 9, 2004. A reception
followed the event, which was free and open to the public.
- The Friends of the Library of The University of North Carolina at
Pembroke presented Drs. Patricia Valenti and Stephen
Berry, discussing their new books, respectively, SOPHIA
PEABODY HAWTHORNE: A LIFE, VOLUME 1, 1809-1847, and ALL
THAT MAKE A MAN: LOVE AND AMBITION IN THE CIVIL WAR SOUTH,
Tuesday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Assembly Room of the
Native American Resource Center. A reception and book signings by the
authors followed.
- The Friends of the Library of The University of North Carolina at
Pembroke presented "Hurricanes and History: Storms, Lighthouse,
and Coastal North Carolina" with two outstanding programs
about our coastal heritage. Both programs were free and open to the
public. A reception and book signing by the authors followed the presentations.
Books were available for purchase.
- Jay Barnes, Director of the north Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll
Shores and author of North Carolina's Hurrican History,
presented slides and commentary on the topic "Hazel,
Floyd, and 50 Years of Savage Storms" Thursday,
October 28, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. in the Moore Hall Auditorium.
- Cheryl Shelton-Roberts and Bruce Roberts, collaborators for the
book North Carolina Lighthouses: A Tribute of History and Hope,
presented slides and commentary on the topic "Lighthouses
of North Carolina: Their Past, Present, and Future"

2004
- The Friends of the Library of The University of North Carolina at
Pembroke presented "Books, Barbecue, and
Bluegrass" featuring television personality and book commentator
D. G. Martin, Dr. Shelby Stephenson and The Stephenson Family
Band with guest Les Sandy, and library staff member and fiddler
Michael Munford, April 23, 2004 in the Sampson-Livermore Library.
All proceeds benefit projects of the Friends of the Library of UNCP.
- The Friends of the Library of The University of North Carolina at
Pembroke presented the film "Tobacco Money
Feeds My Family" February 5th at 7:00pm in the Moore Hall Auditorium.
Film commentary was provided by producer/director and co-editor Cynthia
Hill. This event was free and open to the public. Cover

2003
- The Friends of the Library and the Division of Academic Affairs of
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke presented author Dori
Sanders discussing "Writing from the Rural Perspective"
and reading from her work Thursday, December 4th at 7:00pm in the Main
Reading Room of the Sampson-Livermore Library. A reception followed
the evening program. The event was free and open to the public.
- Dr. Raymond Rundus discussed his new book "Joseph
Mitchell: A Reader's and Writer's Guide" Thursday, November
6th in the Main Reading Room of the Sampson-Livermore Library. A reception
followed the program.
- "Live! @ the Library!" was the theme
for the library's annual benefit on Friday, April 4, 2003. This event
featured Bland Simpson, author, entertainer, and Director of the Creative
Writing Program at UNC Chapel Hill; Dr. Roger Brown, UNCP Provost, faculty
member, and musician; Dr. Nick Giannatasio, UNCP administrator, faculty
member, and musician; Tim Van Hooser, UNCP library staff member and
entertainer; and the UNCP brass ensemble, as well as a buffet dinner,
reception and both silent and live auctions.
- Allan Gurganus, award-winning author of
"Oldest
Living Confederate Widow Tells All" and North Carolina native,
read from his works Friday, March 14, 2003.

2001
- Dr. Raymond Rundus, Professor Emeritus of English, discussed his new
book on Robeson County native and New Yorker reporter Joseph
Mitchell on Wednesday, November 14th in the Moore Hall Auditorium.
- Dr. Michael Spivey, Assistant Professor of Sociology, signed and informally
discussed his book, Native Americans in the Carolina
Borderland: A Critical Ethnography, Wednesday, November 28th in
the Sampson-Livermore Library.
- Friends of the Library Reception and Banquet was held Friday, April
6th in theChancellor's Dining Room. Dr. Thomas Ross, UNCP professor
of geography, spoke on " A Geographer's Journeys
in North Carolina".
2000
- Dr. Gretchen Bataille, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
at The University of North Carolina and noted scholar in the field of
Native American literature, spoke about her research and work on Monday,
September 11th.
