REG/POL ##: International Student Health Insurance Regulation

 

1. PURPOSE 

 

1.1 The State of North Carolina requires that international students maintain adequate health insurance while attending The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP). While many other countries bear the expense of health care for their residents, individuals in the United States are responsible for these expenses themselves. A single day of hospitalization can cost thousands of dollars. A good insurance policy gives you access to excellent medical facilities and provides protection against the enormous costs of health care.

 

1.2 All international students in F-1 or J-1 status, who are studying in the English Language Institute or Academics, are required to purchase the UNCP Health Insurance Plan. Please review the details of the plan carefully. Effective dates for fall semester are August 1-December 31, and for the spring semester the effective dates are January 1-July 31.

 

1.3 Students are required to check-in at the Center for International Programs at the beginning of fall and spring semesters. During their check-in they must provide a copy of their health insurance registration.

1.3.1 If students need assistance in registering for the health insurance plan, the Center for International Programs will assist them at check-in.

2.  WAIVER ELIGIBILITY

 

2.1 All international students are required to have the UNCP Health Insurance. The only waivers granted and proof must be shown are: military dependents, ISEP students and students who have changed from an H-4 to an F-1 and are under a parent’s policy.

 

3. VISITING FACULTY OR SCHOLARS

 

3.1 All visiting faculty or Scholars, on a J-1, are required to purchase insurance through the Center for International Programs Office. The current policy is with HTH.

 

4. STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES GENERAL INFORMATION

 

4.1 UNCP maintains a professionally staffed Student Health Services, conveniently located on the UNCP campus, to provide treatment for basic medical conditions for current UNCP students.
