REG/POL ##: Advancement through the English Language Institute

 

1. PURPOSE

 

1.1 The Advancement through the English Language Institute Regulation (effective November 15, 2012) is used to determine a student’s eligibility to advance from lower-level to higher-level classes in the English Language Institute’s English as a Second Language program.

 

2. SCOPE      

 

2.1 This regulation applies to all students of the university’s English Language Institute.

 

3.  REGULATION

 

3.1 An incoming English as a Second Language student is placed in his/her appropriate level for each of the skill courses provided by the English Language Institute.  Placement will be determined by the English Language Institute after an assessment battery has been conducted.     

 

3.2 In order to advance from lower-level to higher-level classes in the English Language Institute’s English as a Second Language program, students must meet several English proficiency requirements.

 

3.2.1 At the midpoint and the end of each semester, students have the opportunity to advance to the next level based upon their performance and with the consent of the director of the English Language Institute.
