Post-Study Abroad...What's Next?

You've returned from a fantastic UNCP study abroad and you are about to graduate. You want to take your new energy and funnel it towards another academic challenge in graduate school. Below is a list of opportunities for you to consider as you move on to the next phase of your life:

Critical Language Scholarship

• Sponsored by U.S. Department of State.
• All applicants must be U.S. citizens.
• Applicants must be currently enrolled in a U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate or graduate level.
• Current undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of general college course-work by program start date (one year is defined as two semesters or three quarters).
• Be in acceptable mental and physical health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Information Form and Physician’s Statement.
• Applicants must be 18 by the beginning of the 2012 CLS Program.
• Please see 2012 CLS Institute Language Levels for more information on language pre-requisites for individual institutes.
  Students in all disciplines, including business, engineering, law, medicine, sciences, and humanities are encouraged to apply.

• Graduating seniors are eligible to apply, as long as you are enrolled at the time of application.

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Established by the U.S. Congress in 1992, The Morris K. Udall Foundation honors Congressman Morris King Udall's thirty-year legacy of public service. As set forth in the founding legislation, the purposes of the Foundation are to:

• Increase the awareness of the importance of, and promote the benefit and enjoyment of, the nation's natural resources;
• Foster a greater recognition and understanding of the role of the environment, public lands and resources in the development of the United States;
• Identify critical environmental issues;
• Develop resources to train professionals properly in environmental and related fields;
• Provide educational outreach regarding environmental policy;
• Develop resources to train Native American and Alaska Native professionals in health care and public policy;
• Through the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution, provide assessment, mediation, and other related services to resolve environmental disputes involving federal agencies.

General Information
Subject: Unrestricted.
Eligibility: Open only to United States citizens who (at the time they take up their Scholarship) hold a first degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States with a minimum GPA of 3.7. To qualify for awards tenable from October 2008, candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate college or university after April 2005.

NB Persons already studying for or holding a British degree or degree-equivalent qualification are not eligible to apply for a Marshall Scholarship.

Value: University fees, cost of living expenses, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States and, where applicable, a contribution towards the support of a dependent spouse.

Number of Awards: At least 40 Scholarships awarded annually.

 

The Mitchell Scholarship: www.us-irelandalliance.org

The Mitchell Scholarship, named to honor the former U.S. Senator’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to public service and community.

 

Twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on three criteria: academic excellence, leadership, and a sustained commitment to service and community. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and an international travel stipend.

The mission of the Truman Scholarship Foundation is:

• To find and recognize college juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service.
• And, to provide candidates with financial support for graduate study, leadership training, and fellowship with other students who are committed to making a difference through public service.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program will award approximately 40 scholarships to seniors and recent graduates planning to attend graduate school for the first time starting in fall 2008.  

Award
Each award covers a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and books for the graduate degree chosen. The amount and duration of awards vary by student based on the cost of attendance and the length of the graduate program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum available per student per year of study is $50,000 and the maximum length is six years. 

Getting Nominated
Students interested in this scholarship must be nominated by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their institution. Students may not apply directly to the Foundation for this program. 

The Rhodes Scholars: www.rhodesscholar.org

The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American Scholars were elected in 1904.

 

American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose 32 Scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. Through 2004, applicants from more than 300 American colleges and universities had been selected as Rhodes Scholars. In most years, a Rhodes Scholar is selected from an institution which has not formerly supplied a successful applicant.

• Is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
  
• Is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.
  
• Was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress to "enable the government of the United States to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries."
  
• Awarded approximately six thousand grants in 2006, at a cost of more than $235 million, to U.S. students, teachers, professionals, and scholars to study, teach, lecture, and conduct research in more than 150 countries, and to their foreign counterparts to engage in similar activities in the United States.
  
• Receives its primary source of funding through an annual appropriation from Congress to the Department of State. Participating governments and host institutions in foreign countries, and in the United States, also contribute financially through cost-sharing and indirect support, e.g., through salary supplements, tuition waivers, and university housing.
