This innovative summer program is sponsored jointly by Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and Rovaniemi University of Applied Sciences cross-cultural development program for business, technology, and health care and social services students. Students may earn up to 6 semester hours (12 ECTS units).
Two weeks will be spent in Pori, Finland and two weeks in Rovaniemi, Finland, with a long weekend trip to St. Petersburg, Russia, in the middle. Activities will focus on problem based learning and cross-cultural projects. This is excellent exposure to working with an international team.
Students in the fields of business, technology, and health care and social services are eligible to participate. The program will emphasize problem-based learning techniques and teamwork in international groups of 6-8 students. Prior to arrival, students will have preparatory reading assignments relevant to their field. Lectures in the three fields will be presented by local and international faculty who serve as teacher-tutors during the program. In addition, there will be keynote presentations by leaders in private business, public services and universities. This is an excellent and unique exposure to problem solving in an international atmosphere. Time for recreational activities such as water sports, wilderness adventure and meeting reindeer is allowed.

The Cross-cultural Development Course is divided into three different topics according to students’ fields of study:
• Developing the Future Health Care and Social Services
• The Technology Case: The new machine vision applications and 3D Virtual Reality Environments for the use of welfare
• The Business Case: Even small businesses are international
Each of these themes form a 3 US credit hour (6 ECTS) course. Some of the key-note speakers are common to all three themes as well as the method of solving the problems in multicultural groups, formed of 6-8 students. The students work mainly with their own themes, and report their assignments using a virtual eLearning environment (Moodle course management system).
