Art 1234 – Special Topics in Art: The Art of Paris course is intended to enhance students’ knowledge of the art of Paris: its architecture, museums and artwork. The class will consist of online preparatory work, a trip to Paris to view original art and architecture, and an online follow-up class for presentations. We will travel to Paris to study the characteristics of its art and architecture, so that we can better appreciate the importance the city has to the art world.
Art 1234 – Special Topics in Art: The Art of Paris is a course intended to enhance students’ appreciation of the visual arts of Paris by exposing them to Paris museums, galleries, architecture and etc. Students will tour museums such as the Louvre, the Musee de l’Orangerie, and the Rodin Museum as well as architecture such as the Eiffel Tower, the Pompidou Center, and Notre Dame de Paris. Students will also be introduced to philosophies and information about artists who created work in Paris from medieval to modern times. In addition, the class will learn about the different media artists use and explore the reasons why the artwork is considered significant.
Dr. Tulla Lightfoot, Art Department Associate Professor, has developed an amazing faculty-led study abroad in Paris, France during Maymester (maximum 12 students). This 11-day study abroad includes:
May 10-12 Online portion of the class: Introduction/Vocabulary for Art (Chapter 1 – 5 Living With Art). Topics: Vocabulary for Art, Introduction to Paris , Basic French phrases.
Art Media 2-dimensional, Chapters 5 – 9
Topics: Drawing, Painting, printing, camera arts, Museum of Paris, Continued Basic French phrases.
Art Media 3-dimensional, architecture, Chapters 11, 13
Topics: casting, modeling, carving, Sculpture gardens of Paris, Cathedrals and architecture.
Day 1 Depart from the U.S.
Day 2 Arrival in Paris – Eiffel Tower.
Day 3 Louvre Tuileries Gardens (Musee de l’Orangerie – impressionist art), Pont Neuf (Christo). Champs Elysee to Arc de Triomphe.
Day 4 Pompidou Center (contemporary art), Museum Picasso (modern art).
Day 5 Museum d'Orsay (post impressionists), Arc du Triomphe, Museum National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet (Asian art).
Day 6 Louvre, Palais de la Decouverte (Leonardo da Vinci collection).
Day 7 Versailles Palace (train trip RER).
Day 8 Museum Marmottan-Monet (Impressionist), Bois du Bologna.
Day 9 Montmarte (Sacre Coeur - Moulin de la Galette), Rodin Museum (sculpture).
Day 10 Free time.
Day 11 Fight home to U.S.
May 25
On campus review, Final project due.

Cost: $2,900
You must have approval from the Study Abroad Coordinator. You must be registered forArt 1234 – Special Topics in Art: The Art of Paris (3 credits). Tuition and fees for UNCP Maymester course are not included in cost of faculty-led study abroad to Paris, France.

This is an approved study abroad program through the Center for International Programs and the Art Department, and may qualify for financial aid. In order to qualify for financial aid a student must be registered for full-time studies (6-credits) in the summer. Most grants, loans, or scholarships should apply to this approved program. Please direct all questions about student financial aid eligibility to the Director of Financial Aid, Bruce Blackmon.

Payment Plan:
Individual payment plans may be arranged with the Study Abroad Coordinator and are flexible based on a student’s individual financial situation. Please note that all deposits/payments are non-refundable.
