Trust, Lust, and a Good Dame: Courtship Rituals in British Literature is a 3-credit, General Education course that allows students to experience British literature first hand in London! Imagine reading a Jane Austen novel about finding true love in a London ballroom and then visiting that very place. But, as we will discover, true love is not the only thing one finds in London. Throughout our time in the city, we will explore how this urban space allowed prostitution, exploitation, and even murder to flourish. As we read stories describing the differences between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots,’ we will visit museums and historic houses to understand the role that London played in the lives of everyday people searching for love, happiness, and security.
During this ten day tour of London, students will be able to lead their own walking tour of a neighborhood featured in one of our readings, and we will enjoy the sights, sounds, and tastes of historic London. We might find ourselves retracing Jack the Ripper’s footsteps as he terrorized women of the night, or we might walk the path of disillusioned post-World War II writers. As a class, we will attend at least two theatre shows that relate to our theme, and students will keep a travel journal of all their experiences. So join us as we learn why London continues to intrigue modern readers and, just maybe, we will discover why this city has changed the way we see the world.
