Globe featuring ChinaUNCP Program in China - Beijing/Xi'an
Summer (Maymester) 2011
07 May - 24 May
Faculty-Led

Application Deadline:
March 1, 2011
Description and Academics

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has partnered with:

  • Xi'an University of Posts and Telecommunications (XUPT) in Xi'an China
  • The China Center for International Education and Exchange (CCIEE) and
  • The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU)

T'ang Dynasty Figurine, Shaanxi Province Historical Museum, Xi'anto offer an exciting, unique, and very affordable study abroad program focusing on Chinese history and culture.

  • Includes transportation and all scheduled tours and meals!

Now in its second highly-successful year, the program introduces students to the grand sweep of China's long - and fascinating - history. In particular, it provides students with an understanding of the immensity and richness of Chinese culture, with a special focus upon its most creative, opulent, and interesting period, that of the T'ang Dynasty (618-907), whose capital was Chang'an - today's modern Xi'an.

The program begins in China's modern political capital, Beijing. There, participants visit terrific - unforgettable - sites like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace, and shop for bargains and souvenirs in places like Beijing's famous Silk Street. In the evenings, you will take in a spectacular Kong-Fu show, and a truly fascinating performance of the Beijing Opera in an authentic 19th century theater. The opera's costumes alone (see illustration below) are worth the trip!

Forbidden City and Moat, BeijingThe program then transfers by air to Xi'an and XUPT where program participants attend lectures by experts in Chinese art, history and culture. Participants also visit many important historical sites and museums (the majority of which are rarely visited by western foreigners); experience urban, rural, modern and ancient culture; and acquire an appreciation of Chinese language, literature and cuisine (excellent in Xi'an!).

A special feature of the program is the daily opportunity to interact, collaborate - and make friends - with English-speaking Chinese university students just like you who participate in many of the program's activities, both in the classrooms and elsewhere.

Please Note: Due to the program structure, passport deadlines and payment deadlines are firm. See below for more details.

Required Courses

Chinese History and Culture/Great T'ang Dynasty (3 transfer credits). Taught by a team of XUPT and UNCP faculty members, this course introduces students to Chinese history, culture, and customs. You will learn about the origins of China, the great dynasties and poets, the foods of various regions, and even which kinds of teas are best, where they come from, and why (and when) you should drink them. A parallel study track will introduce you to the T'ang Dynasty and to the art of China, teaching you how to look at, understand, and "read" Chinese artworks - and how they were made. In addition to class time, students participate in cultural events in and around Xi'an that enhance their learning experience, and put their studies into context.

The Big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'anWLS 2990 Study Abroad (3 UNCP credits) - Participating students are required to prepare a substantive report regarding their experiences abroad or to write a report on a particular point of interest they may have researched or encountered while in China.
