"You must be a registered student, or a faculty/staff in order to participate in intramurals." Rules: All games will be played under NIRSA Flag Football Rules with modifications as indicated in this document.
Rule 1 The PlayingField
A. The playing field is 80 yards long by 40 yards wide, with ten yard zones.
B. The field of play is divided into four 20 yard zones
Rule 2 Equipment
A. All players must have red or yellow flags. Whatever color flag you wear you must not have the same color shirt or shorts.
B. Footballs will not be provided by intramurals.You may choose your own football.
C. Tennis shoes may be worn. If you wear cleats, they may not have any metal spikes on the bottom.
D. Jewelry isn't permitted while playing.(ex. bracelets, watches). If you wear necklaces or earrings, you assume responsibility if they are broken.
Rule 3 Players
A. Number of players
Men and women- SEVEN.......SIX players minimum.
Rule 4 The game
A. Coin toss will determine who has the option for choosing the ball or field position (this may be deferred to the second half.)
B. Length of game-Regular season and playoff games will consist of two halves, 20 minutes each, with a maximum of 5 minutes between halves.
C.Time-outs- Each team is allowed two time-outs per team.(60 second duration)
D.Clock runs continuously for the first 18 minutes except for time-outs and injuries.
E. During the last 2 minutes of the second half the clock will be stopped for the following:
1.Scoring(TD or safety)
2.Time-outs
3. Incomplete passes
4.out-of-bounds
5.First down
6. Penalties
7.Touchback
8.Change of possession
9.Any type of stalling by either team
Rule 5 Special rules
A. No kickoffs
B. Game begins with the first offensive team starting on 10 yard line.
C.If a backward pass or fumble by a player strikes the ground it's dead where the ball hits the ground.
D.An incomplete forward pass will be brought back to the original line of scrimmage.
E. All players are eligible receivers.
F. Offense must have four players on the line of scrimmage.
G.Each offensive team has 25 seconds to snap the ball afetr the referree has put the ball in play.
H. You may not try and steal the ball from the carrier.
I.Only one forward pass per down.
J. If a player looses his flags the defenders must tag the carrier.
K.Tackling is not permitted.
L. One foot has to be inbounds for a player to be able to catch a thrown ball or off an interception.
Rule 6 Scoring
A. Scoring
Touchdown- 6 points
extra point from 3 yard line - 1 point
extra point from 10 yard line-2 points
extra point from 20 yard line- 3 points
Safety- 2 points
Points scored by defense during extra points- 2 points
B. Mercy rule- If any team is 18 or more points ahead when the official announces the 2 minute warning for the second half, or have a 35 point lead any time in the second half the game will be ended.
C.Tie game
1.Each time has one time-out.
2.Coin flip will determine who has first possession.
3. Each team will start from the defenses 20 yard-line. The object will be to score a touch down. If the defense intercepts the offenses first possession and runs it back for a score the defense wins.
4.After the first overtime, teams will alternate possession.
Rule 7 Blocking
1. For offensive blocking you must have your hands by your side or behind your back.
2. Defense may not use their hands to gain an advantage to get by blockers.
3. A ball carrier can't deliberately run through an opponent attempting to deflag him.
4. A ball carrier can't guard his flag while defender is attempting to deflag him.
Rule Penalties
1.Illegal kick- 10 yards
2. Illegal procedure/False start- 5 yards
3. Offsides- 5 yards
4. Delay of game- 5 yards
5. Illegal forward pass- 5 yards and loss of down.
6. Illegal contact(offense or defense) 10 yards
7.Holding- 10 yards
8.Pass interference(offense- 15 yards plus replay of down)
9. Pass interference(Defense- 15 yards plus replay of down)
10. Personal foul(Defense)- 15 yards
11. Personal foul(Offense Illegal secured flag belt)-15 yards plus loss of down
12. Any tackling- 15 yards plus disqualification
13. Flag guarding 10 yards from the point of foul plus loss of down
If any team member abuses any officials or uses profanity towards a referee or player he or she will be ejected from the game. Any fights or ejections will result in a one game suspension and can be more if it's severe enough. The Intramural Director or his Assistant will let anyone know if they're required to miss more than one game. If the Intramural Director or his assistant deem it necessary they can make it more than a one game suspension. A repeated offense will automatically result in suspension for the remainder of the season. Continued profanity by player/players could result in a team having to forfeit additional games.
If any team member is found to be playing illegally(non-students or withdrawn students or a varsity football player) that team will forfiet all games played with illegal player and will be fined $50.00. The Captian is responsible for this fee. That team will not play again until that fee is payed. All fines will be put back into intramural budget.
