student requirements for Clinical experiences

Program Students

Prior to a student being permitted to begin his/her clinical experiences each year, he/she must complete the following requirements:

  • Attend the required Orientation/Training Session
  • Complete Bloodborne Pathogen Training
  • Complete CPR for the Professional Rescuer or provide documentation of current certification
  • Sign the Confidentiality Statement
  • Provide documentation of current Liability Insurance coverage
  • Sign the ATS Contract
  • Complete the ATS Time Commitment form and meet with the ACI for appropriate signatures
  • Sign the ATS Handbook Acknowledgement of Understanding

Failure to complete the above required items will result in the student not being permitted to begin clinical rotations. Since clinical rotations are a required part of the Clinical Education course, the student’s grade will be affected.

minimum requirements for Clinical experiences

The minimum requirement for each clinical course is as listed below:

  • ATH 2000 = 3 x 5 week rotations (25 hours each = 75 hours)
  • ATH 3000 and 3010 = average of 10 hours per week (150 hours per semester)
  • ATH 4000 and 4010 = average of 20 hours per week (300 hours per semester)

If a student is not able to meet the minimum requirement for the clinical experiences during a given semester, he/she must defer at least a portion of the rotation. Students will need to consult with the Clinical Coordinator to begin the deferral process.

maximum requirements for Clinical experiences

Students are required to have comparable relief (or days off) from clinical experiences during the academic year. To this end, the following policies have been developed:

  • Students must have at least one day off per week
  • Students may not be required to stay over long breaks such as Fall Break, Thanksgiving Break, Winter (Christmas) Break and Spring Break
  • Students may be asked to assist during preseason camps prior to the beginning of the academic year provided the clinical hours count toward their fall semester requirement

Students may volunteer to accumulate additional clinical experiences once their clinical hour requirement is met for a particular rotation, however they cannot be required to complete additional hours and they may not carry additional hours forward to a different rotation.
