  • The Honors Council will meet every Thursday at 5:00 PM in the Oak Hall Multipurpose Room (unless otherwise notified): All Honors College students are welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.  Please contact the chair for an agenda.

Description: This is a mandatory event for freshman and new honors college students and an open invitation for all honors college students. Light snacks and cold beverages will be served. Dress appropriately. Come by and meet our new members and reconnect with the old.

How I Got a Job at Graduation: Internship Strategies and Transition Dialogue
Where: Oxendine Science Bldg, room 2250

Description: Honors student Courtney Stoker will take part in a casual conversation about her recent internship experience in Washington D.C. and share her experience in parlaying that into a post-graduation job with a top company. Light refreshments and Q & A will follow.

Moon Festival Celebration (see attached flier)
Where: The Office of International Programs (http://www.uncp.edu/map
Time: 4:00 PM-6:00 PM
Description: The Office of International Programs has extended a warm welcome to Honors College faculty and students to attend this year's Moon Festival. This event will feature different kinds of Chinese food and moon cakes, along with traditional entertainment associated with the Moon Festival. This is an important event for those in many Asian cultures and a special opportunity to meet some of our international students and build what we political scientists like to call social capital.

This event is not open to the public and requires some advance planning. I would like to please request the favor of your reply to our office by Friday (9/21) if you wish to attend so that appropriate plans can be made. Please email responses to Dr. Milewicz at: mark.milewicz@uncp.edu

Honors Coffee House
Where: Honors College lobby in Old Main
Time: 9:00 AM-12:00 noon

Description: Come by and visit for a cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and a small bite to eat. Come when you can, and leave when you must. This is also a perfect opportunity to meet some new faces and ask questions about the college you may have always wanted to ask.

The Chancellor’s Cookout and Pumpkin Carving Event
Where: The Chancellor’s residence (on the west side of the UNCP campus).
Time: 6:00 PM

Description: As one of the few groups invited, this annual event is a great opportunity to enjoy the fall weather and share good times with other notable campus organizations (Honors College, International Programs, SGA, Teaching Fellows) and university leaders.

Time: 9-12 each day of exam week

17th (Thursday)

The Student Honors Council Presents: Game Night!
What: 3 hours of fun with bowling, billiards and food
Where: The Student Center Game Room (University Center)
Times: 6:00PM-9:00PM
Description: Brandon Blackwell (chair of the Student Honors Council) and the members of the Student Honors Council are hosting a welcome back get together in the Student Center from 6-9.
The UC game room and bowling alley is reserved for honors college students only, with food and drinks provided. All food and games are free of charge.
Please come out, meet your representatives on the Student Honors Council and spend some time having nothing but fun. Our newest members are especially welcome! Come alone or bring an honors friend.

Hickory Hall Open House
Where: Hickory Hall
Times: 3:30PM-5:00PM 
Description: To commemorate the successful transition of the Honors College and The College of Arts and Sciences to Hickory Hall, we are holding an open house from 3:30-5:00. All honors students and members of the campus community are invited to attend. Since so much of Hickory Hall is devoted to student space, please drop by and help us celebrate the good news of our new home with the UNCP campus community. Light refreshments will be served.

Graduate School Interviews: A Survival Guide

Description: Honors College member Chris Hudson discusses his experience with graduate school interviews at public and private institutions. Light refreshments and Q & A will follow. This is a very casual and helpful opportunity for upper and lower-classmen who might be considering graduate studies in the future to get a sense for the challenges and opportunities of transitioning into a graduate program.

Honors Off-Campus Museum Trip
What: Edvard Munch and More Love: Art, Politics, and Sharing since the 1990s

Description: Under the guidance of art professor Dr. Tulla Lightfoot, the Honors College will host an off-campus day-long trip to see two very distinct and compelling art collections. This event is free of charge. Transportation will be provided. Please RSVP by February 6th (Wednesday).

What: Lunar New Year Celebration with the Office of International Programs (see attached flier)

Description: This event is open to Honors College as well as other international students and members of the Global Learning Community. Bring an Honors College friend and enjoy a nice evening of food and fun.

Description: In light of the power outage that interrupted the Game Night during the first week of class, Brandon Blackwell (chair of the Student Honors Council) and the members of the Student Honors Council are hosting a rematch for everyone in the Honors College. As before, The UC game room and bowling alley is reserved for honors college students only, with food and drinks provided. All food and games are free of charge. Please come out and join us in our second test of the power grid!

March

Honors Brown Bag Luncheon with Dr. Beverly King
Topic: The Inside Looking Out:  What I Wish I Had Known About Graduate School (and Beyond) Before I Got There.

Where: University Center, Conference Room 233 
Time: 12:15-1:15
Description: This combination presentation/discussion is intended to acquaint students with how higher education in general, and graduate school in particular, "works." The primary focus will be on making oneself competitive in the graduate school admission process, financing graduate school, and surviving the rigors of graduate school.  A secondary focus will be on understanding how one moves up “the ranks” in higher education; this is particularly important for those students who are entertaining thoughts of careers as faculty or administrators.  For all attendees, the session will provide information that will help them be more thoughtful consumers of higher education, both at the undergraduate and the graduate levels. Box lunches and beverages will be provided.
