TEXT: PHYSICAL
SCIENCE by B.W. Tillery, 9th ed.
(McGraw Hill, 2012).
COURSE CONTENT: The course is intended to cover the fundamental
principles and applications of the physical sciences. This will include such topics as measurement,
motion, force, work, energy, temperature and heat, wave motion, the periodic
table, elements, compounds, solutions, and chemical equations. This corresponds roughly to chapters 1 - 5
and 8 - 10 in the text.
GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: This course satisfies the
Physical Science requirement within the Natural Sciences division of the UNCP
General Education requirements.
OFFICE HOURS: They are your time to individually interact with
the instructor to ask questions, discuss problems, etc. The office hours are for your benefit — USE THEM!.
E-MAIL: Information for this course will occasionally
be distributed via email. Please make
sure to check your UNCP email regularly.
GRADES: Your final grade will be determined from one of
two options and assigned as follows:
(Note: exam dates, with the exception
of the final, are subject to change)

If the student does not sit for any one of the midterms
a grade of zero will be assigned to the missed exam and Option 1 will
automatically be in effect. Under Option
1 the exam with the lowest score from exams I, II, and III will be dropped. If the student does attempt
all three midterms then he/she does not have to sit for the final exam. By completing AND submitting a final exam,
you are choosing Option 1. If I do not
receive a final exam paper from you, grading option 2 will be used to calculate
your final course grade.
Exams will consist of problems and questions related to the
assigned syllabus topics, and in general at a level comparable to the
homework. Although the exams will be
‘closed book’ an equation sheet will be provided which may be helpful. Hand calculators are permitted. Students
engaging in dishonesty of any type concerning exams or grades will be punished
to the full extent permissible by UNCP.
For further details on the academic honor code consult the current UNCP
Student Handbook.

MISSED EXAMS: The first exam missed by a student, for any
reason, will count as the one to be dropped.
The only valid excuse for missing a second exam is a written certification
by an M.D. that you were unable to attend the exam due to illness, or a
documented emergency that made attendance at the exam impossible. Students with a valid excuse who miss a
seconded exam will be given a make-up exam at the earliest convenient date.
HOMEWORK: Submission of homework for this class is
optional. Students will receive one
extra credit point for each COMPLETE homework assignment that is submitted on
time. The total extra credit points
acquired in this manner will be added to the lowest of your midterm exams. The assigned problems for each chapter will
be listed below during the
semester. The completed assignment is to
be turned in to me, in person, at the beginning of the class period in which
they are “due”. Illegible assignments
will not receive credit. Homework will
be graded and returned to you during class in approximately one week. On the day that the assignments are due we
will take time to go over the questions/problems. Late homework will NOT be accepted unless accompanied by a written excuse from a M.D.
for the day on which the assignment was originally due.
REGRADING OF EXAMS: Students may request regrading
of selected test problems by returning the exam in person to me with a brief
written justification no later than one week after the graded exam is returned. Only those problems requested will be regraded. Only one regrade request is permitted for each exam. Any alteration of an exam
that is then submitted for a regrade will be
considered a dishonest act and dealt with as outlined above.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance in this class is required. Roll will be called at the beginning of class
or you will sign an attendance sheet. If
you are not present when roll is taken then you will be marked absent for that
class period. Do not sign in for another
student as this will be considered a violation of the Student Academic Honor
Code and will result in a significant lowering of the offending
student’s final course grade. Extra
credit points, added to the lowest of the midterm exams, can be obtained with
good attendance as indicated:

CELL PHONES: Cell phones and other electronic communication devices are not permitted in class. Phones are to be turned OFF and put away! The student is not permitted to use the calculator function during exams. The first time a student is observed using their phone, in any manner during class time, he/she will lose the ability to acquire ANY extra credit for the course. Subsequent violations of this policy will result in accumulating a negative 5 points for each violation, with these points applied to the students cumulative midterm exam score.
DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES: Any
student with a documented learning, physical, chronic health, psychological,
visual or hearing disability needing academic adjustments is requested to speak
directly to Disability Support Services and the instructor, as early in the
semester (preferably within the first week) as possible. All discussions
will remain confidential. Please contact Disability Support Services, DF Lowry Building, Room 103 or call 910-521-6695.This
publication is available in alternative formats upon request.
RELIGIOUS
HOLIDAY POLICY: The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has a
legal and moral obligation to accommodate all students who must be absent from
classes or miss scheduled exams in order to observe religious holidays; we must
be careful not to inhibit or penalize these students for exercising their
rights to religious observance. To
accommodate students’ religious holidays, each student will be allowed two
excused absences each semester with the following conditions:
1. Students,
who submit written notification to their instructors within two weeks of the
beginning of the semester, shall be excused from class or other scheduled
academic activity to observe a religious holy day of their faith. Excused absences are limited to two class
sessions (days) per semester.
2. Students
shall be permitted a reasonable amount of time to make up tests or other work
missed due to an excused absence for a religious observance.
3. Students
should not be penalized due to absence from class or other scheduled academic
activity because of religious observances.
A
student who is to be excused from class for a religious observance is not
required to provide a second-party certification of the reason for the
absence. Furthermore, a student who
believes that he or she has been unreasonably denied an education benefit due
to religious beliefs or practices may seek redress through the student
grievance procedure.
