Text:      Analytical Mechanics 7 th ed.
Authors:   G. R. Fowles and G. L. Cassiday
Publisher:  Cengage Learning, 2005

COURSE CONTENT:  Mechanics of particles and system of particles. Solution of problems in Newtonian Mechanics, one dimensional motion, linear, damped, and driven oscillations; two particle collisions, introduction to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Dynamics. Central force motion.  This corresponds to chapters 1-11 in the text.

OFFICE HOURS:  They are your time to individually interact with the instructor to ask questions, discuss problems, etc.  The office hours are for your benefit — USE  THEM!.

HOMEWORK:  “I understand the material — I just can’t do the problems.” The importance of attempting/solving the homework problems cannot be over emphasized.  Students often ask what is the best way to study for a physics class.  The answer is to attempt as many of the problems at the end of each chapter as possible.  The assignments represent only the minimum that should be understood.  The required problems for each chapter will be listed below or distributed during class throughout the semester.  The completed, neat, stapled assignment is to be turned in to me, in person, at the beginning of the class period in which they are due.  Messy, unstapled submissions will be returned with a grade of zero.  Homework will be graded and returned to you during class in approximately one week.

MISSED EXAMS:  The first exam missed by a student will count as the one to be dropped.  The only valid excuse for missing a second exam is a written certification by an M.D. that you were unable to attend the exam due to illness, or a documented emergency that made attendance at the exam impossible.  Students with a valid excuse who miss a seconded exam will be given a make-up exam at the earliest convenient date.

REGRADING OF EXAMS:  Students may request regrading of selected test problems by returning the exam in person to me with a brief written justification no later than one week after the graded exam is returned.  Only those problems requested will be regraded.  Only one regrade request is permitted for each exam.  Any alteration of an exam that is then submitted for a regrade will be considered a dishonest act and dealt with as outlined above.

GRADES:  Your final grade will be determined as follows (exam dates, with the exception of the final exam, are subject to change):

Approximate Scale

Homework                  20%

A’s   90-100

Exam I (2/10/12)       25%

B’s    80-89

Exam II (3/23/12)     25%

C’s    65-79

Exam III (4/25/12)

D’s    50-64

Final Exam (5/1/12)    30%

F        < 50

                       Total  100%

Exams will consist of problems and questions related to the assigned syllabus topics, and in general at a level comparable to the homework.  Although the exams will be ‘closed book’ an equation sheet will be provided which may be helpful.  Hand calculators are permitted.  Students engaging in dishonesty of any type concerning exams or grades will be punished to the full extent permissible by UNCP. For further details on the academic honor code consult the current UNCP Student Handbook.

CELL PHONES:  Cell phones are not permitted in class.  Phones are to be turned OFF and placed in you backpack or purse.  The student is not permitted to use the calculator function in class or during exams.  If your phone rings more than once during class time you will be asked to leave and marked absent for that class.  If your phone rings during an exam you will be asked to leave the exam and a grade of zero will be assigned to that exam.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Attendance in this class is required.  Roll will be called daily at the beginning of the class period.  If you are not present when roll is called, you will be marked absent for that class period.

DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES: Any student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments is requested to speak directly to Disability Support Services and the instructor, as early in the semester (preferably within the first week) as possible.  All discussions will remain confidential.  This publication is available in alternative formats upon request.  Please contact Disability Support Services,  DF Lowry Building, Room 107, or call  910-521-6695 for an appointment.

RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY POLICY:  The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has a legal and moral obligation to accommodate all students who must be absent from classes or miss scheduled exams in order to observe religious holidays; we must be careful not to inhibit or penalize these students for exercising their rights to religious observance.    To accommodate students’ religious holidays, each student will be allowed two excused absences each semester with the following conditions:

1.    Students, who submit written notification to their instructors within two weeks of the beginning of the semester, shall be excused from class or other scheduled academic activity to observe a religious holy day of their faith.  Excused absences are limited to two class sessions (days) per semester.

2.   Students shall be permitted a reasonable amount of time to make up tests or other work missed due to an excused absence for a religious observance.

3.   Students should not be penalized due to absence from class or other scheduled academic activity because of religious observances.

A student who is to be excused from class for a religious observance is not required to provide a second-party certification of the reason for the absence.   Furthermore, a student who believes that he or she has been unreasonably denied an education benefit due to religious beliefs or practices may seek redress through the student grievance procedure.
