College Physics ICOURSE CONTENT: A treatment of the subject
matter of general physics at a level of thoroughness expected in such curricula
as pre-med, biochemistry, etc. Topics to be covered include: motion in one and
two dimensions, vectors, Newton’s laws, work and energy, momentum, circular
motion, gravity, rotational motion, and oscillatory motion. This corresponds to chapters 1-8 & 13 in
the text. If time permits we may cover
some material from chapters 9 and/or 14.
GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: This course satisfies the
Physical Science requirement within the Natural Sciences division of the UNCP
General Education requirements.
OFFICE HOURS: They are your time to individually interact with
the instructor to ask questions, discuss problems, etc. The office hours are for your benefit — USE THEM!.
HOMEWORK: “I understand the
material — I just can’t do the problems.” The importance of attempting/solving
the homework problems cannot be over emphasized. Students often ask what is
the best way to study for a physics class. The answer is to attempt as many of the
problems at the end of each chapter as possible. The assignments represent only the minimum
that should be understood. The required
problems for each chapter will be listed below during the semester. The completed, neat, stapled assignment is to be turned in to me, in person, at
the beginning of the class period in which they are due. Messy and/or unstapled submissions will be
returned with a score of zero. Homework
will be graded and returned to you during class in approximately one week. Solutions will be posted in the bulletin
board between rooms 3202 & 3211.

If the student does not sit for any one of the midterms
a grade of zero will be assigned to the missed exam and Option 1 will
automatically be in effect. Under Option
1 the exam with the lowest score from exams I, II, and III will be dropped. If the student does attempt
all three midterms then he/she does not have to sit for the final exam. By completing AND submitting a final exam,
you are choosing Option 1. If I do not
receive a final exam paper from you, grading option 2 will be used to calculate
your final course grade. Exams will
consist of problems and questions related to the assigned syllabus topics, and
in general at a level comparable to the homework. Although the exams will be ‘closed book’ an
equation sheet will be provided which may be helpful. Hand calculators are permitted. Students
engaging in dishonesty of any type concerning exams or grades will be punished
to the full extent permissible by UNCP. For further details on the academic
honor code consult the current UNCP Student Handbook.
MISSED EXAMS: The first midterm exam missed by a student
will count as the one to be dropped. The
only valid excuse for missing a subsequent exam is a written certification by
an MD that you were unable to attend the exam due to illness, or a documented
emergency that made attendance at the exam impossible. Students with a valid excuse who miss a
second exam will be given a make-up exam at the earliest convenient date.
REGRADING OF EXAMS: Students may request regrading of selected
test problems by returning the exam in person to me with a brief written
justification no later than one week after the graded exam is returned. Only those problems requested will be
regraded. Any alteration of an exam that
is then submitted for a regrade will be considered a dishonest act and dealt
with as outlined above.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance in this class is required. Roll will be called at the beginning of
class. If you are not present when roll
is taken then you will be marked absent for that class period. Do not answer for another student as this
will be considered a violation of the UNCP academic honor code and will result
in a significant lowering of the offending student’s final course grade. Extra credit points, added to the lowest of
the midterm exams, can be obtained with good attendance as indicated:

CELL PHONES: Cell phones and other electronic communication
devices are not permitted in class.
Phones are to be turned OFF and put away. The student is not permitted to use
the calculator function in class or during exams. The first time a student is observed using
their phone, in any manner during class time, he/she looses the ability to
acquire ANY extra credit for the course.
Subsequent violations of this policy will result in accumulating a
negative 100 points for each violation, with these points applied to the
students overall homework point total.
RISE Enrichment: This
class section has been designated as a RISE Enrichment course. The mission of this program is
to positively impact student retention and academic achievement by creating and
maintaining an engaged scholarship and interactive learning environment on
campus. enrichment sessions are held at least three times per
week and are optional review sessions for students enrolled in historically
difficult courses. The enrichment leader for this course is Ms. Cindy Bakken (cab035@bravemail.uncp.edu), who has taken this, and
other physics course, and done well in this course. RISE Enrichment provides
the opportunity for you to get together with students in your class, as well as
the leader, to reinforce lecture material, have questions answered, and review
for exams. This assistance is provided for all students who want to improve their
understanding of course material and improve their grades. Regular attendance
at RISE Enrichment sessions makes preparing and reviewing for a test much
easier. RISE Enrichment is a FREE service. Come as often as you like and
remember that statistics show the more you come, the better your grade! The
times and locations of the RISE Enrichment sessions will be determined during
the first few weeks of classes based on a survey of your available times.

DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES: Any
student with a documented disability needing academic adjustments is requested
to speak directly to Disability Support Services and the instructor, as early
in the semester (preferably within the first week) as possible. All discussions will remain
confidential. This publication is
available in alternative formats upon request.
Please contact Disability Support Services, DF Lowry Building, Room 107, or
call 910-521-6695 for an appointment.
RELIGIOUS
HOLIDAY POLICY: The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has a
legal and moral obligation to accommodate all students who must be absent from
classes or miss scheduled exams in order to observe religious holidays; we must
be careful not to inhibit or penalize these students for exercising their
rights to religious observance. To
accommodate students’ religious holidays, each student will be allowed two
excused absences each semester with the following conditions:
1. Students, who submit written
notification to their instructors within two weeks of the beginning of the
semester, shall be excused from class or other scheduled academic activity to
observe a religious holy day of their faith.
Excused absences are limited to two class sessions (days) per
semester.
2. Students shall be permitted a
reasonable amount of time to make up tests or other work missed due to an
excused absence for a religious observance.
3. Students should not be penalized
due to absence from class or other scheduled academic activity because of
religious observances.
A student who is to be excused from class for a
religious observance is not required to provide a second-party certification of
the reason for the absence.
Furthermore, a student who believes that he or she has been unreasonably
denied an education benefit due to religious beliefs or practices may seek
redress through the student grievance procedure.
SUGGESTED PROBLEM
ASSIGNMENTS
These
assignments come from the “Problems” section at the end of each chapter. Although no problems will be assigned from
the “Conceptual Questions” section, you may wish to look at some of them (the
answers to the odd numbered conceptual questions are also in the back of the
book).
Homework
assignments are due one week after the conclusion of the relevant chapter.
