This
year has brought an important development for our son. Despite his clear and rigid ideas
about how and when things should be done, he used to have a lot of trouble getting
those around him, particularly his parents, to understand his
instructions. Now, he has begun
to master this thing they call language and has made effective use of
expressions such as “No way!” His employees sometimes respond better
to the carrot than the stick, so he sometimes tosses in a “pease” or a “ga-po”
to request or acknowledge a favor; they seem to like that. Other words that he has come to find
useful are “pay” (“play”), which he uses as an injunction to a potential partner,
and “lolly,” which he uses to request his favorite object on this earth, a
lollipop. Will’s appreciation
for the power of language is obvious.
Before, when his gestures and grunts reaped no results, he would break
down in frustration. Now, when
he requests something and gets it, he giggles, delighted that he actually has
made contact.
At his young age, Will has already begun to develop some
hobbies. Like the rest of his
family, he enjoys books, which he calls by name. He takes after his dad, too, in his love for the
outdoors. One of his favorite pastimes
is going for a ride in a stroller or on the back of Mommy’s bike. He adores his sister and has a special
affinity for her toys, but he also can be perfectly content entertaining
himself with makeshift playthings: laundry baskets, Dad’s wallet, the
bathroom sink. Finally, true to his
name, he enjoys anything physical, especially running, climbing, and throwing.
