We call him "the Boss."  He tends to bark out orders, and we tend to listen.  "More milk? Yes, sir."  "New undergarment?  Right away, sir."  "Entertainment?  You got it, sir."  I guess that's what we get for naming him Will--a word we chose not because it is short for William, but because it represents something we cherish: human possibility.  In its associations with choice, force, and even the future tense, "will" seems an appropriate name for a young man--especially this one.  Although he was due on the Fourth of July, he decided to arrive nearly a week early, on June 28, 2001.  His middle name also refers to things we love.  An ash, of course, is a tree that grows in a part of the country we love, the Appalachian mountains--and, not coincidentially, supplies material for baseball bats.  It also is the name of a letter in the Old English alphabet.  Thus, in those three letters, we captured something of the earth, age, and the English language, making it--we thought--a nice complement to our daughter's name, Esprit Nueva, "new spirit" in French and Spanish.

The Boss has a soft side, too.  When he is full, dry, and content, in fact, he can be quite charming.  He is working on a beautiful grin, which he has flashed for both his dad and his grandmother.  Pediatricians will tell you that babies don't really smile at this age.  These are the people, though, who swear that you can teach a baby to nap.  The truth is that Will not only smiles, but does so out of deep and genuine affection for the people who love him.
