One More Canada

The star of 2001 in the Canada family was its newest member, Will Ash Canada, born June 28.  Weighing in at a little under 7 pounds, he was healthy from the start.  Over the next several months, he proved to be happy, as well—extremely happy.  Strangers encountering his ear-to-ear grin would constantly ask us, “Is he always this happy?”  Yes, almost.  If he felt shortchanged on food or rest, he turned hostile, but most of the time he exhibited an astonishing joie de vivre.

Unlike Essie, Will arrived during the summer months, meaning I could stay home with him, as well as Lisa and Essie, most of the time.  Both Lisa and I stayed busy at home, though, not only caring for Will and Es, but keeping up with our other jobs.  In the two months before and after Will’s arrival, Lisa catered four events, including a rehearsal dinner for some 70 people.  Meanwhile, I taught one summer course, designed an online grammar course for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s distance-education program, wrote an article on Benjamin Franklin, and compiled an index for The Companion to Southern Literature.

We also managed to do a bit of traveling.  In addition to introducing Essie to New York City in March, we led a trip to Boston, Massachusetts, for a group of 16 college students in June.
