Exams, Job Hunting, and Other Adventures
Having
lived away from our families in Indiana since 1992, we took advantage of the
new World Wide Web and began posting news and pictures of our life in Chapel
Hill, North Carolina, where I was working on my doctorate in English at the
University of North Carolina. As
it turns out, we had a lot to report.
In the spring, Lisa continued working at UNC’s Department of Nutrition
while I wrote my dissertation, taught composition classes at Carolina and
Duke, studied with fellow graduate students in a group called the Junto, and
took my Ph.D. written and oral exams.
After I passed those exams, Lisa and I enjoyed a wonderful summer in
Chapel Hill, where we relaxed at a house we rented out in the country and
took in the many pleasures of one of the country’s premier college
towns. This idyllic life took a
turn in September, however, with the arrival of Hurricane Fran, which left us
without power and running water for several days. In the fall, I began looking for a position as an English
professor, traveling to conventions in Savannah, Georgia, and Washington,
D.C.
Over the course of the year, we had the chance to make
several pleasure trips, as well.
We spent my spring break in Florida, for example, and celebrated our
seventh anniversary with a trip to Ashland, Virginia. We also had some great experiences in
Ocracoke, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; and Stauton, Lexington,
and Williamsburg, Virginia. In
addition to visiting our families in Indiana, we had the pleasure of
entertaining our parents and one of Lisa’s nieces in North Carolina.
