Welcome to AST 201

I want formally to welcome you to this class and to encourage you to explore this website thoroughly. Throughout the semester I will post updates, announcements, and new materials for our consideration. This site is a medium through which you are encouraged to interact with me and with your fellow students, and I hope it will be a place where we can all learn together. Again, welcome.

Theme of the Course

AST 201 does NOT take a chronological approach and does NOT seek to explicate some "meaning of America" or archetypal "American Experience." Rather it seeks to acquaint you with the theories and methods scholars have developed in their study of American culture. By the end of the semester, at the very least, you will no longer be intimidated by such terms as structuralism and post-structuralism, feminism and post-feminism, marxism and post-marxism. At best, you will have become a more trenchant critic of your own culture, past and present.
