UNCP's virtual world campus includes a model facility for command, control and communication meetings of trustees, administrators and campus security personnel in the event they were prevented by an emergency from traveling from or entering the real-world campus in Pembroke, North Carolina.

The Campus Security Operations Center, situated on the university's campus in the 3D virtual-reality Internet world Second Life, is designed to function as a meeting space with a wide array of communications technologies at hand.
Participants at meetings in the virtual security operations center can be dispersed anywhere in the real world.
The prototype display building is outfitted with:The Campus Security Operations Center can be scaled up easily when further development, expansion and customization are desirable.
- conference and work tables with chairs
- interactive campus, state and national maps
- computers with Internet, Web and email connections
- TV and live-video screens for streams of programs entering Second Life from real life broadcasters and other sources
- shared media, parcel media and prim media
- text, voice and video communication via Internet email and Skype telephone
- quality voice chat for audible conversations in addition to the standard keyboarding
- the latest presentation technologies and equipment
- media players and RL news feeds and tickers
- social media links
- links to weather observation and forecasting services
- informative documentation about many kinds of emergencies
- great flexibility for quick changes of room setups for activities
- sandbox nearby for quick builds as well as more extensive construction projects
- free stylish clothing and other necessities for persons new to Second Life
