Baseball league devoted to '59 season
By Nathan Walls
For sports gamers who love yesteryear, you may want to take a look at the All American Retro Baseball League.
The league, founded in 2003, has 10 members whom are currently playing the 1959 season.
How, you ask?
Strat-O-Matic software is used via email and net play to keep the glory years alive.
According to aaretroleague.com, the league has already played the 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1958 seasons.
Members play for free and own fictitious franchises that compete in a league comprised of the East and West division.
The league's constitution states: "Each AARBL team will play a 154-game schedule through the 1960 season. Beginning with the 1961 season, all teams will play a 162 game schedule. The schedule will be "unbalanced," and will be determined by the commissioner with input from team owners prior to each season."
Drafts take place prior to each season and transactions, such as trades and releases, are allowed during the course of the season. The Kansas City Athletics released Pee Wee Reese on March 22, and traded Don Blasingame and its 2nd pick of the second round (originally from the Peoria Chiefs) to the Bayside Brewers for pitcher Gary Bell.
In this year's mock version of the 1959 season, the So Cal Knights have relocated to the Eastern Division and renamed the franchise the Potomac Fighting Democrats. The Bayside Brewers also moved to Forbes Field. Both of those transactions took place on March 21.
If those facts don't prove the intuitiveness of the league, the notion that awards are given out at the end of the season does. An MVP, Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Rolaids Reliever and Rookie of the Year award winners are named each year.
Knowing that an interactive tribute to those seasons and players exists today is a testament to the special memories that still linger.
