According to David Z. Hall, MD, many smokers are unsuccessful at quitting because of severe withdrawal symptoms. Every person has a different level of nicotine addiction. People who are more physically dependent on nicotine can have more severe withdrawal symptoms when they quit. They may benefit the most from nicotine replacement such as the patch, gum or nasal spray.
