Higher Ground Outdoor Programs
About Us

Higher Ground Outdoor Programs are experience-based programs aimed at helping individuals and groups strive for excellence through a variety of initiatives that accentuate communication, problem solving and teamwork. Higher Ground Outdoor Programs can tailor an experience that will meet the developmental or educational needs of any group.

Higher Ground provides individuals and groups opportunities to:

  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Participate in appropriate risk taking
  • Develop enhanced communication
  • Collaborate and cooperate
  • Establish trust and respect
  • Build leadership

How does Higher Ground do this?

The group activities and “low ropes” initiatives are designed to foster a positive group experience by having individuals participate in tasks that require a combined group effort in order to succeed. Creativity, tenacity and strategic planning are characteristic of successful group outcomes.

The Alpine Tower is the main component of the “high ropes” course. Participants are required to draw upon inner courage and strength to aid in stepping outside of a “perceived physical comfort zone”. This experience serves as a gateway to heightened awareness of self and an increased sense of confidence and self-esteem.

What populations can benefit from the “Higher Ground” experience?

School groups ranging from junior high through post secondary, businesses and corporations, at-risk populations, summer programs and camps, athletic teams, Scout groups and church groups.

How can one program address the needs of such a wide range of groups?

Similar dynamics exist across a wide range of groups and this may be the reason for the effectiveness of outdoor adventure programs like Higher Ground. Higher Ground seeks to address issues relative to group similarities rather than group differences.

THE ALPINE TOWER

The Alpine Tower is a 50-feet tall climbing structure that provides a variety of climbing routes with varying levels of difficulty. The tower is accessible for persons having physical disabilities which may impair them from participating in other challenge courses.

Benefits of a day on the tower can include:

  • Personal Development
  • Increased Interpersonal Effectiveness
  • Willingness to take Calculated Risks
  • Physical Ability and Coordination
  • Trust Building
  • Open and Effective Communication
  • Increased Self Confidence

TEAM INITIATIVES COURSE

The team initiatives or “low ropes” course is a series of problem solving elements constructed of logs, cables and ropes. These elements are no higher than one foot from the ground. Facilitators guide groups through these initiatives with the hope of fostering

  • Team Building
  • Problem Solving
  • Conflict Resolution Skills
  • Effective Communication
  • Trust Building
    Recognition and Celebration of Success

Will people be forced to do things they don’t feel comfortable doing?

A philosophy of “challenge by choice” is the hallmark of all Higher Ground programs. With this ethic, no one is ever forced to do anything they do not want to do. Little gain can be expected from forcing individuals to participate in personal growth activities. However, participants are strongly encouraged to step outside their personal comfort zone, while maintaining complete physical and emotional safety.

Who can use this resource?

Any group leader that feels the need for challenge, growth and development is invited to contact us and let us schedule a program for your group.

Trained facilitators staff all Higher Ground Outdoor Programs at UNCP. All safety equipment, such as ropes, helmets, and climbing harnesses will be provided. Participants should come prepared to participate in moderate physical activity. Programs are conducted in all weather conditions therefore participants should dress appropriately. No one wearing open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops will be allowed on the course. Most importantly, participants should come with an open mind and be prepared to HAVE FUN!!!
