Primary Care Exposure Activity

Who is eligible to participate in the PCEA?

  • Applicants must be a:
    • former HCOP college student that has successfully completed a Summer Enrichment Program OR
    • college student enrolled at UNCP OR
    • recommended college student enrolled at Robeson Community College

What type of experience do participants gain through this exposure?

  • PCEA is more than a shadowing experience. PCEA participants are involved in daily health care operations conducted in a hospital or clinic setting. Each experience will be tailored to the participant’s prior knowledge and clinical experience so that the participant can gain personal insight in the health profession of interest.

When will the program take place?

  • The PCEA is a 4 week experience conducted normally during mid-May through early June.

Are the hospital and clinical sites predetermined?

  • Participants will gain experience at medical sites in the local university area (Robeson, Cumberland, Hoke, Scotland, Bladen, and Columbus counties). HCOP has partnered with Southeastern Regional Medical Center and local clinics to offer participants a meaningful experience in a health profession of interest.

May the participant suggest a preferred site?

  • Yes. Participants may identify in the appropriate section of the application a location(s) that targets the special interest of their health professions career.

Can I choose my own hours?

  • Participants must complete a minimum of 30 hours per week in the PCEA. The participant will be targeted towards the hours of operation that will provide the most exposure and experience from the assigned site.

Does HCOP provide transportation and housing during the PCEA?

  • No. Participants are responsible to provide for transportation and housing during the experience.
