The Health Careers Opportunity Program provides educational enrichment experiences to college, high school and middle school students.
PRIMARY CARE EXPOSURE ACTIVITY (College Program)
The Primary Care Exposure Activity targets fifteen (15) college students who wish to pursue careers in the health professions. HCOP provides opportunities to pre-med college students to gain practical exposure and experience in the health and medical professions. Selected students shadow local health professionals in a hospital or clinical setting for four weeks. The exposure activity will normally occur during the first summer session. SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (High School Program)
The Summer Enrichment Program targets high school seniors and rising college freshmen who wish to pursue careers in medical or health related professions of Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry, Veterinary, Osteopathy, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Allied and Public Health. Twenty-five (25) selected students will spend six weeks on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Participants receive academic instruction by UNCP faculty in the areas of: English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Math, Computer Science, Basic Study Skills, and Communication Skills. (Apply NOW)
Preference will be given to students who are enrolled or graduate from an accredited U.S. high school. Participants will be selected on the basis of their interest in pursuing a health professions career, relevant coursework and grades, personal essay, letters of recommendation, and their ability to contribute to the goal of the program. Students must meet the selection criteria for the program which applying to.
MR and MS WIZARD PROGRAM (Middle School Program)
The Mr & Ms Wizard Program targets 6th grade students from the Public Schools of Robeson County. One hundred selected students enrich their math and science skills, while broadening their knowledge of careers in science. Topics include physics, chemistry, biology, computers science, and meteorology. Classes are conducted two Saturdays each month from 8:30 a.m to 12:00 p.m. Students experience science first hand in the UNCP laboratories and in-state field exercises. (Apply NOW)
