The mission of the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) is to increase the number of students applying to and completing health professions curricula, especially students who have aspirations of returning to rural Southeastern North Carolina to practice their profession.

The purpose of HCOP is to increase student awareness of health careers and health training programs in Medicine, Optometry, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, Podiatry, Pharmacy, and Public Health.

HCOP provides opportunities for pre-med college students to gain practical exposure and experience in a primary care setting. College students shadow local health professionals through the Primary Care Exposure Activity.

HCOP provides educational enrichment experiences to high school and middle school students. These experiences include a Summer Enrichment Program, for high school seniors and rising college freshmen who wish to pursue careers in medical or health related professions, and the Mr. and Ms. Wizard Program for 6th graders.
