financial aid

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke has one of the lowest tuition rates in the UNC system. Some financial assistance is also available in the form of Graduate Assistantships and loans.

A limited number of Graduate assistantships (GA's) are awarded by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies to outstanding graduate students. GA's are typically awarded for an academic year and are renewable. Graduate Assistants are required to be enrolled as full-time graduate students. This means that the graduate assistant must not have regular employment and must be enrolled for nine (9) semester hours of graduate credit with the exception of MSW students who need to be enrolled for at least tweleve (12) for each semester s/he holds the assistantship. Only the Graduate Dean may grant exceptions to this rule and such exceptions normally entail a reduction of the stipend.

Graduate Assistants are assigned to work with senior faculty members on research projects and other professional/scholarly activities. Each graduate assistant is evaluated by his/her supervisor at the end of each semester. The maximum stipend for an academic year is $6000, and the work obligation for this stipend is 20 hours/week under a supervisor assigned by the Graduate Dean.

Tuition scholarships will be awarded, on a competitive basis, to the most eligible Graduate Assistants. Tuition scholarships do not cover University fees, nor do they cover full tuition for out-of-state students. All fees and any tuition balance for scholarship recipients are due and payable at the start of each semester. The University does not award GAs during the Summer Sessions. To be eligible to apply for a graduate assistantship, the students must not have other regular employment and must:

  • be formally admitted to her or his program of graduate study no later than April 1st;
  • be enrolled or prepared to be enrolled as a full-time graduate student taking nine semester hours/semester or at least tweleve semester for MSW students; and
  • submit an Application for a Graduate Assistantship (PDF - requires Adobe Reader) with an attached current professional resume.

GRADUATE STUDENT LOANS

Graduate students normally qualify for Stafford Loans. For further information about this loan program, graduate students may wish to contact the UNCP Office of Financial Aid at 910.521.6255 or 6285. All assistance requires prior completion of FAFSA forms.
